A Y-axis motor MY is driven, and the distance between intersection points Y1, Y2 is detected by the detecting head and outputted to a comparator. On the basis of this signal, the numerical control device NC computes slippage ΔY between the generating center and the cutting edge center so as to obtain the generating center cutting edge position set data in the axial cutting start position of the gear hob, and the distance ΔY is shifted in the Y-direction to obtain a cutting edge position.

As a result, a switching means SCR is inserted into a connection circuit between a d.c. power source 7 and a returning motor 6. In response to detection signals from the service interruption detectors RA1, RA1' or from the abnormality detectors RA2, RA2', therefore, the d.c. power source 7 is connected to the returning motor 6. Thus, the returning motor 6 is driven by the d.c. power source 7, so that a tool and a gear material make their relative movement and are moved away from each other.
