The compliant contactor can be either a single pole compliant contactor (50) or double pole compliant contactor (72).

    • A molded thermoplastic housing (100) includes base (102) and cover (104) members joined by a living hinge (106). The base member (102) includes a peripheral wall (108). Four solderable printed circuit patterns (112, 114, 116 and 118) are vacuum deposited onto the interior and exterior surfaces of both housing members. The printed circuit patterns on opposing surfaces of the base and cover members are joined by conductive through-holes (e.g., 120 and 122), while the printed circuit patterns on the interior surfaces of the base and cover members are joined by an interconnecting printed circuit pattern (124) which is vacuum deposited onto the living hinge. Mylar sheets (132) are adhered to the exterior surface of the housing to insulate the exterior printed circuit patterns. An antenna pattern (126) is also vacuum deposited onto an exterior surface of the housing. A switch (136) and battery contact (152) are integrally formed with the housing and an integrally molded structural support means strenghthens the housing members. The housing is manufactured "opened up" and, at the final assembly stage, the cover member is rotated about the hinge until it contacts the upper surface of the peripheral wall (108B). Snap-fit connectors (e.g., 110) join the cover to the base.

By providing a layer of light concentrating plastic (44) between the upper polarizer (36) and the LCD cell (28), light emitted from bevelled edges (48) of an aperture (46) in the plastic is directed towards the cell and reflector directly, without passing through the upper polarizer (36). This is in addition to the normal ambient light passing through the front polarizer. This increases the intensity of light reaching the observer (20) and thus the contrast of the display.

    • An apparatus for generating a remote alert signal in a communication receiver, the apparatus includes a remote alerting device, a latching receptacle enclosed within a casing of the receiver, and an electrical connector cable. The latching receptacle includes a socket accessible from outside the casing and a locking means comprised of a resilient means and an actuating means. The connector cable terminates at one end with the alerting device and at the other end with an electrical connector in the form of a mating plug having a groove extending around the periphery of the plug. The mating plug inserts into the socket and the resilient means being normally biased into the groove prevents disengagement of the mating plug. To release the plug, the actuating means forces the resilient means out of said groove to permit the mating plug to separate from the socket. The connector cable provides electrical communication between the receiver and the alert device. Additionally, the combination of the groove and resilient means allows the mating plug to be rotatable to prevent twisting in the connector cable.

    • A clear plastic lens contains a fluorescent dye. The lens is substantially parallelepiped in shape with two major opposed parallel surfaces and four sides. Three of the sides are reflecting sides. Each reflecting side has two flat transparent surfaces positioned at angles of 135 degrees relative to the opposed parallel surfaces. The fourth side is a transmitting side that has one flat transparent surface perpendicular to the opposed parallel surfaces. Light enters the lens through an opposed parallel surface, is absorbed by the fluorescent dye, and is emitted a short time later. The emitted light is reflected at the reflecting sides and opposed surfaces, and redirected towards the transmitting side where it passes into the environment as a collimated beam.In another embodiment, the transmitting side is at an oblique angle relative to the opposed parallel surfaces and has a plurality of small steps. Each step has two surfaces, one perpendicular and one parallel to the opposed parallel surfaces. The emitted light passes into the environment through the first surfaces of the steps.The complete assembly includes the lens positioned adjacent a circuit board. An opening in the board permits light to enter the lens from a lamp which is soldered to the opposite side of the board over the opening.
