Cutting expanded-metal ; punches.-Metal for reinforcing purposes has rows of depressed and separated V-shaped members pointing in the same direction, with short bridges at the points of the V's, and with strips of continuous metal between the rows, the bridges and strips being in different planes to either of the planes of the arms. To produce this, the sheet metal is first slit along the lines a', Fig. 1, the arms a of the V's being at the same time forced downwards, each transverse series of single V-slots being formed by the cutting tool shown in Fig. 4, of which edges and faces b co-operate to cut and depress the parts, while the square-ended faces b result in leaving the continuous strips a at the original level; this tool co-operates with a die in making the cuts. Subsequently the metal is expanded by transverse stretching to produce the form shown in Fig. 2 in plan and in Fig. 3 in elevation, the lowest levels being formed by the bridge-pieces a between the arms of each V, and the highest-levels by the continuous strips a , from which the arms slope downwards to the bridge-pieces, with a certain amount of twist.

    • The ventilating equipment comprises an exhaust pipe extending as an upward branch from the overflow pipe, up through the tank and then outward to a motor-driven exhaust pump discharging to the outside atmosphere. The exhaust pipe has an opening within the tank above the maximum water lever, which opening is closed by a sleeve valve element linked for operation by the rod carrying the float. Intermediate its ends, the overflow pipe has a ball formation housing a free float which seats itself downwardly by vacuum action to close the overflow pipe while the latter is empty, but which float rises to a stop when water gets into the ball housing.

    • A method for the controllable dissolution of one or more alkali metals from a vessel containing a one or more alkali metals and/or one or more partially passivated alkali metals. The vessel preferably comprising a sodium, NaK or other alkali metal-cooled nuclear reactor that has been used. The alkali metal, preferably sodium, potassium or a combination thereof, in the vessel is exposed to a treatment liquid, preferably an acidic liquid, more preferably citric acid. Preferably, the treatment liquid is maintained in continuous motion relative to any surface of unreacted alkali metal with which the treatment liquid is in contact. The treatment liquid is preferably pumped into the vessel containing the one or more alkali metals and the resulting fluid is extracted and optionally further processed. Preferably, the resulting off-gases are processed by an off-gas treatment system and the resulting liquids are processed by a liquid disposal system. In one preferred embodiment, an inert gas is pumped into the vessel along with the treatment liquid.
