    • 363,778. Controlling variable-speed gearing. HARRIS, J. C., 20, Amesbury Road, Moseley, Birmingham. Nov. 7, 1930, No. 33483. [Class 80 (ii).] In order to impart stepped angular displacements in either direction to a spindle A, Fig. 1, controlling the change-speed gear of a motor cycle, repeated oscillations are imparted to a pedal N, Fig. 5. The pedal N is secured to a cover-plate M loose on the spindle A, and is struck by the foot to effect the required movement. A peg L fast in the plate M passes to the left of Fig. 1 through a notch J, Fig. 4, in a pawl plate G, then through a gap X, Fig. 3, in a stop plate E, then over a fixed angled stop C between two springs D , D , Fig. 2, supported in a fixed casing B. Stop plate E, Fig. 3A, carries a through peg F on one end Fl of which is pivoted the pawl plate G which can rock to bring either of its pawl teeth H , H , Fig. 4, into engagement with a ratchet wheel K. Fig. 3, which it embraces. Ratchet wheel K is fast on spindle A. The other end of peg F projects over a fixed angled stop C , Fig. 2, between two fixed return springs D3, D4. When the pedal N is moved up or down, the cover-plate M turns so that the peg L carries pawl plate G with it without at first moving the stop plate E. Plate G rocks far enough to engage one or other of the pawl teeth H , H with the ratchet wheel K. The plates M, G, and E, ratchet wheel K, and spindle A are then locked together and are carried along with the pedal until one of two stop pegs S , S2, Fig. 3, on the plate E engages and is stopped at R, R , Fig. 2. Spindle A has completed one step in the gear change, and is locked by suitable means so that on release of the pedal N, the springs DI and D or D and D3 return the other parts to the initial position. Spindle A may be moved a step farther, or a step back, by a further oscillation of the pedal. An indicator P, Fig. 1, fast to the spindle A moves over the fixed casing B to show what gear is connected at any time. The spindle A may be moved directly at any time by an independent hand-lever Q.
