    • The invention relates to helical retainers, particularly helical retainers adapted for use in laparoscopic surgery. One aspect of the invention provides a helical retainer having a sterile coiled body adapted and configured to secure a surgical suture, the coiled body having a plurality of coils and being formed from a strand and an extension of the strand extending from the coiled body adapted to engage a suture or to be grasped by a holding tool. Another aspect of the invention provides a method of using a helical retainer including the steps of placing a helical retainer at a desired location, the helical retainer comprising a plurality of coils, engaging a suture with the helical retainer at a first engagement point, and engaging the suture with the helical retainer at a second engagement point to secure the suture to the helical retainer.

    • The suture retainer according to one aspect of the invention has a retainer body and a plurality of suture attachment mechanisms spaced circumferentially about the retainer body, each of the suture attachment mechanisms (such as a pair of teeth) being adapted to hold a suture strand at a discrete attachment point. Another aspect of the invention provides a method of securing a suture in a suture retainer, including the following steps: providing a suture retainer having a retainer body and a plurality of suture attachment mechanisms spaced circumferentially about the retainer body; and attaching a suture strand to the retainer body at each of the suture attachment mechanisms. Yet another aspect of the invention provides a suturing method including the steps of: attaching a first end of a suture strand to a suture retainer; contacting a tissue contact portion of the suture strand with tissue to be sutured, the tissue contact portion being disposed between the first end of the suture strand and a second end of the suture strand; and attaching the second end of the suture strand to the suture retainer at a plurality of suture attachment points spaced circumferentially about the suture retainer.

    • An everting applicator for brachytherapy of body cavities such as the vagina has a flexible sleeve secured to a distal mandrel, both the sleeve and the mandrel having internal lumens. The flexible sleeve has a diverging opening at its distal end, preferably bell-shaped or cone-shaped, such that when the open end is pushed against the mouth of a vagina, the sleeve will evert back upon itself, progressively unrolling to an inside out configuration wherein, fully inserted, the sleeve is fully everted back over the exterior surface of the mandrel. A radiation source, isotopic or electronic, is then inserted into the mandrel lumen to commence a therapeutic irradiation procedure of tissues of the vagina.
