    • A clock monitoring circuit is disclosed for detecting that the period of a clock signal has become shorter than a predetermined time interval. The clock monitoring monitoring circuit comprises a first and second flip-flop circuits that are D-type flip-flops, a delay circuit, and a gate circuit. The second flip-flop circuit receives as an input signal the output signal of the first flip-flop circuit. The output signal of the second flip-flop circuit is delayed a fixed time interval by the delay circuit and then supplied as an input signal to the first flip-flop circuit. The delay time of the delay circuit is set to be equal to the previously described predetermined period. The gate circuit receives the output signals of the first and second flip-flop circuits, and provides a signal whose logic level when the period of the received clock signal is the predetermined period differs from that when it is shorter than the predetermined period. The fact that the period of the clock signal has become shorter than the predetermined period can thus be detected.

    • An IC card is set to an RF mode by default when drive electric power starts being applied to the IC card. When both a clock signal and a reset signal are applied to respective connection terminals, the IC card switches to a terminal mode. The clock signal and the reset signal that are applied to the respective connection terminals can be detected without the need for an analog circuit such as a comparator. The IC card can be switched between the terminal mode in which only input signals applied to the connection terminals are effective and the RF mode in which only an input signal applied to a radio antenna is reliably effective, with only a digital circuit.

    • A temperature determining apparatus produces a predetermined reference voltage from an operating voltage supplied thereto from the outside, divides the reference voltage with a pair of resistance values having different temperature-resistance characteristics to produce a first divided voltage and divides the reference voltage with a pair of resistance values having the same temperature-resistance characteristic to produce a second divided voltage, and compares the first and second divided voltages to determine a threshold temperature. Since the reference voltage is constant as long as an ambient temperature is not changed even when the operating voltage is changed, the first and second divided voltages are not changed depending on the operating voltage, thereby allowing the determination of an ambient temperature with favorable accuracy in a wide range of operating voltages.
