    • A manifold (1) connects three boiler circuits (3, 4, 5) and a heat exchanger circuit (6) and an indirect cylinder heat exchanger circuit (7) of a central heating system (2) together. The manifold (1) comprises a container (20) which defines a hollow interior region (25) which is divided by a horizontally extending partition plate (28) into an upper flow water region (28) and a lower return water region (29). First ports (35) are provided for connecting flow pipes of the circuits (3 to 7) into the flow water region (29) of the manifold (1) and second ports (36) are provided for connecting the return pipes (16) of the circuits (3 to 7) into the return water region (30) of the manifold (1). A communicating opening (32) and apertures (38) in the partition plate (28) communicate the flow and return water regions. The partition plate (28) stratifies the water within the hollow interior region so that the hottest flow water is above while the cooler return water is below the partition plate (28). The manifold (1) forms a neutral pressure point in the system (2) so that the circuit (3 to 7) can operate independently of each other, while at the same time, the circuits (6, 7) operate in association with the boiler circuits (3, 4, 5).

A device for facilitating blocking of a lens to a holder 15, Fig. 5, prior to grinding includes means for holding the stem 6 of the holder and four stops 11 1 , Fig. 1, to engage the underside of the lens and locate it in relation to the holder, the stops being equally spaced on the circumference of a circle co-axial with the holder. The means for holding the stem consists of a clamp 4 of brass or the like, which is operated by a screw 9 controlling the width of a radial slot 7 formed opposite to a weakening hole 8. The clamp 4 is secured in a recess 2, Fig. 3, in a plastic block 1 by screws and supports the pins 11 1 . Two semiannular plates 12 of plastic or similar material are applied over the pins and secured to the clamp by screws 13. The back face 15 1 of the holder rests on the plates 12, the upper face of which is square with the hole in the clamp and parallel to the lower face of the block 1. The upper face of the holder 15 may be convex or concave with one or more concentric grooves or ribs 15 11 for improving the bond with a layer of pitch by means of which the lens is secured to the holder. The lens is pressed down on to the pitch so that the cross lines customarily marked thereon are in alignment with the joint between the plates 12 and a line 14. Fig. 9 shows a second embodiment in which the stem. of the holder is gripped by a split tubular chuck 17 tightened .by a nut 19. The upper face,of the chuck lies below the surface of an annular member 161 which forms a seat for the back face 15 1 of the holder. The device may be used to block bi-focal lenses by aligning the optical centre of the distance field with the markings on the annular face 12 or 16'. When treating cylindrical lenses, the holder 15 with the lens secured to it is transferred to a clamp similar to the clamp 4 and provided with two. aligned rods to serve as manipulating handles.
