    • A tape running guide and tape loading mechanism for magnetic tape recording and reproducing device allows a cylinder drum carrying magnetic heads to minimize its size by employing a three-dimensional loading system is employed in which a level of tape fed to a cylinder drum is made high and that of the tape leaving the cylinder drum is made low. A tape guide system includes, in the tape supply side, at least a first, movable slanted pin and a first, movable tape height regulation guide roller for deriving the tape from an open space of a magnetic tape cassette and winding the tape on the cylinder drum, a second slanted pin and a second tape height regulation guide roller and a third, movable guide pin for winding the tape on the second slanted pin are provided and, in the tape returning side, a fourth, movable slanted pin and a fourth, movable tape height regulation guide roller for deriving the magnetic tape from the open space of the tape cassette and winding the magnetic tape on the cylinder drum, a fifth, movable slanted pin and a pinch roller which are to be derived from the open space of the tape cassette and a capstan arranged outside the open space. These movable tape guide members are movable on a common area in time-shared manner to thereby make the loading mechanism compact.

    • A digital signal recording and reproducing apparatus comprising a dynamic range compression/expansion apparatus. The compression/expansion apparatus (l6) receives a digital signal from, for example, an analog-to-digital converter (ll) and compresses the dynamic range of the digital signal and the so compressed digital signal is supplied to a recording signal processing circuit (27) in the recording operation mode, while the apparatus receives a digital signal reproduction output from a recording/reproducing head (29, 30) and expands the dynamic range of the reproduced digital signal and the so expanded digital signal is supplied to, for example, a digital-to-analog converter (l2) in the reproducing operation mode. The compression/expansion apparatus includes a circuit for controlling the transient response of the apparatus, that is, for controlling the operation of the compression/expansion of the dynamic range of the digital signal during transient of the digital signal so that recording of the digital signal is performed at a high density with a high quality, without suffering breathing effect, overflow, etc.
