    • A flap sander is disclosed for use with a workpiece having a nonlinear profile. The flap sander comprises a cylindrical rotary head including a central hub concentric with an axis of rotation of the rotary head, and an inclined surface extending radially outward from the central hub. A plurality of abrasive flaps are detachably secured to the inclined surface of the rotary head and are aligned in a radial array radiating outward from central hub to the periphery of the rotary head. Each of the abrasive flaps comprises an unsecured working edge having a nonlinear profile that substantially matches the profile of the workpiece to provide an even sanding distribution across the workpiece profile independent of the shape of the profile.

    • A coupling linking a tractor 10 and a trailer 11 having a fifth wheel assembly 12 having a longitudinal outwardly tapering slot defined by spaced ears 15 is provided with an anti-jackknifing apparatus A, B. Sensor C located adjacent a rear wheel 16 of the trailer generates a frequency reflective of the speed of the tractor and trailer. A radar gun, and the like or other sensor may also be used to determine ground speed. Upon receiving a frequency corresponding to a speed exceeding a predetermined speed, a speed controlled switch D engages the anti-jackknifing apparatus. Similarly, the switch D automatically disengages the apparatus upon receiving a frequency signal corresponding to a speed below the predetermined speed or, upon the occurrence of certain conditions, the activation of a turning signal by the driver. A signal light E mounted externally on the trailer indicates when the apparatus has been activated.

    • Apparatus for ultrasonically welding a wire to a wire terminal. A stationary anvil forms the lower horizontal wall of a work chamber into which a wire workpiece is inserted. The vertical walls of the work channel are formed by the walls of a slot in a relatively movable horizontal support plate cantilevered from a base. The slot in the support plate fits about the anvil. The horizontal support plate is oscillatable to swing vertically thereby adjusting the size of the work channel. A terminal is seated on the support plate and covers the chamber. An ultrasonic welding tip contacts the terminal and forces down the support plate so as to maintain very tight spot contact between the wire on the anvil and the terminal, against the flexure of the cantilevered arm. Welding of the wire to the terminal is effected by the ultrasonic vibration of the welding tip against the terminal. As the wire is tightly confined in the work channel, no spreading or splaying will occur while the wire is in a plastic-like state, and the spot weld precisely locates the wire end on the terminal.

    • A towing apparatus of enhanced stability is illustrated for attaching an automobile and other vehicle to be towed to a towing vehicle wherein diverging arms are pivoted adjacent one end of a central bar or frame member which extends rearwardly from a towing vehicle with a slide carried thereon for attachment at predetermined positions along the bar, and diverging links each having pivotal connection on one end on a respective arm and on the other end to the slide member. A chain attaching means is provided for use with the tow bar wherein respective chains carried by the arms are positioned in spread relation adjacent a free end of respective arms and extend inwardly across one another and are attachable to spaced vehicle frame members thus serving as a towing and positioning chain with an extending portion acting as a safety chain.
