    • A single sheet feeder for moving individual sheets from the top of a stack includes a driven sheet separator roller mounted on an arcuately moveable support arm, the roller having an annular sheet engaging friction surface and a bottom sheet retard pad in opposed relationship to the separator roller. In a first embodiment the retard pad has a specially configured sheet engaging surface having a sheet retarding portion which is angled downwardly from the direction of sheet movement to reduce excessively high separator roller drive torque requirements. In a second embodiment, the sheet support surface has a recess proximate the sheet retard pad for receiving the driven separator roller to prevent contact of the driven roller with the sheet support to avoid excessively high separator roller drive torque. Arcuate movement of the roller toward the sheet support is arrested by contact of the roller support arm with any suitable part of the sheet feeder chassis such as the retard pad or stack. support surface before the driven roller contacts the support surface.

    • A sheet transfer apparatus includes a first roller, a second roller and a power train. The first roller is configured to be rotatably driven at a first surface speed. The second roller is spaced from the first roller such that the first roller and the second roller are configured to simultaneously engage a media sheet. The second roller is configured to be driven at a second surface speed greater than the first surface speed. The power train delivers power to the first roller to rotatably drive the first roller. The power train includes a first gear coupled to the first roller, a second gear and a third gear. The third gear is movable between a first position in which the third gear is in power transmitting engagement with both the first gear and the second gear and a second position in which the third gear is out of power transmitting engagement with the second gear.

    • A small footprint device, such as an inkjet printer, having a set of printhead cartridges for applying ink droplets to a medium sheet, the printer including a housing having a pair of side plates. A platen, mounted in the housing between the side plates, helps to define a centrally disposed print zone. Sets of centrally disposed wiper openings, and cap openings, within the platen, help to facilitate, respectively, printhead cartridge wiping services before the medium sheet has passed through the print zone and printhead capping services after the medium sheet has passed through the print zone. A set of rib members extend upwardly from the platen top surface for substantially avoiding residual ink contamination on the underside of the medium sheet as it passes through the print zone.

    • An optical scanner system wherein the central region of the light source is selectively covered up by a mechanically actuated shutter during a transparency scanning mode. By occluding the central portion of the light source, problems with flare and degraded image quality are eliminated. The shutter is actuated to its two positions (normal reflective mode position, transparency mode position) by pins, protrusions, or the scanner walls in the scan module path. When the scan module is driven to the extremes of its travel the shutter is either driven open or closed. A bracket structure is provided to hold the transparent media and a covering light reflective tent, and can include the pin or pins that can protrude into the scanner module path and thus actuate the shutter only when the structure is mounted on to the scanner by the user. The bracket structure can include a lower member that rests directly on the platen glass to align filmstrips, slides, and other transparent media. The tent structure is hinged relative to the lower structure which allows it to be opened and closed to enable insertion of transparent media. When the tent structure is closed it acts as the reflective light path to allow light from the primary light source to be reflected up, over, and down through the transparent media, and into the optical light path leading to the optical sensor.
