The brake is applied by depressing the elbow lever D having a roller J bearing on the free end of the lever C and also a stirrup E which, when in the position shown, allows the levers C, D to turn as one. A second hand-lever similar to the lever D is fitted at the other end of the cross-shaft.

[Cognate Application, 22,452/13.] Heckling-machines.-The ends of the stricks of flax or other fibres are broken by winding the end around a stud d, Figs. 4 and 5, carried by a bar D attached to the usual catch bar C, Fig. 5, of the main or cross channels, or by a bar F, Fig. 4, moving synchronously with the catch bar, and around a touch-pin E fixed to the framework of the machine or mounted so as to move in the opposite direction to the catch bar. The bar F is actuated as shown from the bell-crank lever g operating the catch bar. The touch-pin E, when movable, is actuated by a spring m or by a weight and is carried by a lever pivoted at m and normally held against the action of the spring by a pivoted detent N which is actuated to release the lever on the movement of the catch bar C or bar F by a projection f attached to the part D or F. The parts'm, N are returned to their initial position by the shaft p , which actuates the lifter P, described in Specification 16,010/01, for raising the top-plates of the holders, acting through the medium of the lever p , slotted link p , lever p , shaft p , lever p , and link p . According to the second Provisional Specification the parts m, N may be returned by hand or automatically by suitable cams, levers, and links, and the bar F, if used, may be actuated from a special cam motion. When short flax is being treated, the strick is wound around the touch-pin only.
