Delivery apparatus; associating and collecting apparatus; newspapersealing arrangements; rotary machines.-Apparatus more particularly for pasting together webs for newspapers and the like, either during or immediately after printing in rotary machines, consists of a reservoir a for paste or gum, having a longitudinal slit c, or other openings at the outermost part or parts of the revolving reservoir. The linear velocity of the orifices is preferably equal to that of the web to be pasted, and the shaft d is geared to revolve at such a speed as to cause the paste to be deposited on the web the required distances apart. The paste is fed to the orifice by centrifugal action, and also if desired,by regulated air pressure and paste feed, through the hollow shaft d. The width and length of the orifices, and also their position, may be adjustable ; one way of adjusting the latter is by mounting on the cylinder a, carried loosely by the shaft d, a worm gearing with a worm-wheel fixed to the shaft. The pasting is either for securing sheets at their centre margins, or for forming temporary seals.

Galleys ; leads and rules, type.-Relates to methods of mounting the type, linotype, stereo blocks, &c., on the surface of printing-rollers used for newspaper printing, so as to allow various kinds of printing- surfaces to be used simultaneously. The linotypes a, Fig. 1, are formed taper, and have notches a' on each side, to engage with ribs b formed on the column rules b. These rules pass right round, or only part of the way round the cylinder, according to what other surfaces are required, and have thickened shoulders b resting on the surface of the cylinder, and engaging with recessed rings d which hold the rules &c. down. The part b' of the rule below the shoulders b is thickened to be of extra strength, and the linotypes are correspondingly thinned at that part. Two pages are preferably printed side by side on the cylinder c, and each half is preferably locked up separately, the cylinder having a central rib c towards which each row of linotypes &c. is locked, as it is set up, by screws h ; these screws are forced against bars g which work in dovetailed recesses in the cylinder and have projections g' engaging with the rings d and pushing them towards the centre and against the successive rules b, thereby clamping the linotypes. When the whole surface has been set up, it is finally clamped up by a second ring of setscrews e and a clamping-ring e. Ordinary type is set up between taper leads or rules similar to the linotypes, but having longitudinal ribs or grooves on one side engaging with grooves or ribs on the type to hold it in position. The ends of the columns are secured between headlines screwed to the cylinder, or clumps screwed separately to the rings d, the columns being filled up with space rules if necessary. The linotype &c. could also be mounted on galleys, formed of not more than a semicircle of a ring d combined with a similar length of a rule b, and these galleys may be secured to the cylinder by having bars sliding in longitudinal slots on the forme cylinder. Or the types &c. may be set up in removable " turtles," or segments of the forme cylinder, which are secured to the cylinder when complete by means of bolts.

    • 4618. Foster, J. Y. March 2. Drilling.-A number of drill carriages are arranged with their spindles radial on a circular frame for drilling boiler and other r cylindrical shells. When the shell is a large one, the circular frame o is placed inside, as shown. The shell b is clamped on a turntable a by jaws c, the screws of which are connected by wheels d and a toothed ring e. Each carriage v can be adjusted round the frame o by worm gear 7, and each spindle is driven by a bevel-wheel u on it engaging a toothed ring p, supported by rollers q in the frame o. The ring is driven by a wheel r sliding on a vertical shaft s, geared to the driving-shaft m. The frame o is carried by a cylinder h telescoping into a cylinder f, fixed on the base g. The cylinder h is raised or lowered by three screws i (only one being shown) geared to a central wheel k, driven in either direction through a clutch n and reversing-train l from the shaft m. The turntable can be rotated from a platform 8 by a hand-wheel 9 through gearing 10, 11, 12 and a worm-wheel 13. The position of each spindle is adjusted longitudinally on its carriage by a screw 3 engaging a cover 2, having a projection 2 against which bears a cam on a shaft z on the carriage. The spindle is returned to the position shown by a spring, and is fed forward by rotating the shaft z by worm gearing from the spindle. In another form, the frame o is placed outside the shell, being carried by three brackets simultaneously adjustable vertically on standards. An additional standard with a number of carriages arranged vertically may be provided for drilling the longitudinal seams.
