    • 23,020. Dow, W. S., and Smith, E. J. Oct. 17. Rotary machines; feeding - apparatus for webs; cutting and perforating apparatus; delivery apparatus. - I n a n all - size rotary printing-machine, the web is passed from a roll D at a constant but alterable speed past t a combined looping and feeding device W to the perfecting-couples A A , B B . These revolve uniformly, whatever the length of sheet desired, but the web is given an intermittent motion between them by the combined feeding and looping devices W, of greater or less extent according to the length of the sheet. After passing the second looping-device, the web moves at a uniform speed to the cutting-cylinders 1, 2, which are driven by variable-speed gear which allows the cutting cylinders to move at a variable speed equal to the speed of the web at cutting, while the actual number of revolutions is always the same as that of the printing-cylinders. The sheets are either led to folding &c. devices at 3 or to a flat delivery at 4. The loopers W, W, which are positively driven so as to act also as feeders, are arranged to balance each other, and are driven by a cam Y which is changed for every different length of sheet. Specification No. 17,977, A.D. 1906, is referred to.

Rotary machines ; cutting, collecting, and delivery apparatus; folding paper.-Relates to improvements on the machine described in Specification No. 9230, A.D. 1903, in which set-off in the printing of contents bills, posters, &c. is prevented by the use of a collecting-apparatus and a fly delivery, and comprises (1) an arrangement of cutting, collecting, and delivery apparatus for separating two sets of posters printed alternately on the same web, and (2) the provision of an alternative single delivery with folding-apparatus. Fig. 2 shows a convertible multi-colour and perfecting machine provided with cutting, transferring, and collecting cylinders h, i, j. The collecting- cylinder j is provided with two sets of collecting - mechanism delivering to corresponding flies k, l. The alternative folding and delivery arrangement consists of a tucking-blade on the cylinder i, duplicate grippers on the cylinder h, and a transferring-cylinder p delivering either to a fly q and table r or to a transverse blade folder s delivering to a belt u ; the cylinders h, p may be provided with blades and grippers for giving a second fold. Fig. 4 shows a two colour machine provided with alternative flat and folded single deliveries h, i,j, k and v, w, x, y, z, 1 respectively..

    • 16,816. Dow, W. S., and Smith, E. J. July 31. Rotary machines. -In machines known as ' web all size machines,' the web is run through the machine at a constant speed for all sizes of sheet, and the speed of the printing-cylinder is varied. The web is printed, perfected, superimposed, and folded before the sheets are cut off from the web, carrying tapes being dispensed with. The forme must not cover more than half the forme cylinder B. Four printing- mechanisms may be used, one pair for printing on one side and the other for perfecting, the driving- mechanism being placed between the two pairs. At the time of printing, the speed of the cylinders is that of the web, but, after printing, they are made to rotate more rapidly, the speed depending on the size of sheet to be printed. This may be effected by mounting the driven wheel F in a vibrating frame and gearing it with a non-circular wheel E, a circular wheel on the same shaft gearing with the cylinder trains. Pairs of non-circular wheels in gear, or other means, may be used. Two type cylinders running at varying speeds and working with one impression cylinder at constant speed may sometimes be employed.
