    • An active matrix display device comprises an array of display pixels, each pixel comprising a current-driven light emitting display element (2), a drive transistor (22) for driving a current through the display element (2) and a storage capacitor (30) for storing a voltage to be used for addressing the drive transistor (22). A discharge transistor (36) is used for discharging the storage capacitor (30) thereby to switch off the drive transistor in dependence on the light output of the display element (2). The storage capacitor (30) is adapted to store a voltage which is a function of the threshold voltage of the drive transistor (22). In this way, two-level compensation is provided for threshold voltage variations of the drive transistor, one using a current sampling approach and one using optical feedback. This can extend the lifetime of the display.

    • An active matrix display device has an array of display pixels, each pixel comprising a current-driven light emitting display element (2), a drive transistor (22) for driving a current through the display element and pixel circuitry including an optical feedback element (38), for controlling the drive transistor to drive a substantially constant current through the display element for a duration which depends on the desired display pixel output level and an optical feedback signal of the optical feedback element. An output configuration is applied to the display which includes values for the pixel power supply voltages, the field period and an allowed range of pixel drive levels. The output configuration is varied in response to ageing of the display element. In this device, an output configuration is varied as the device ages, so that the optical feedback system can continue to provide compensation for differential ageing of the display elements for a longer period of use of the display.

    • An active matrix electroluminescent display device has power supply lines (26) in the column direction. An isolating transistor (30) is provided for isolating a drive transistor (22) of each pixel from the pixel display element (2). The device is operable in two modes. In a first mode, the isolating transistor (30) isolates the drive transistor (22) from the display element (2) for each pixel, and pixel drive signals are provided to all pixels of the array in a row-by-row sequence. In a second mode, the isolating transistor couples the drive transistor to the display element and current is driven through the display elements. In this display device, pixel drive signals are loaded into the display array in one phase, in a row by row manner. As the power supply lines are in columns, during loading of the pixel drive signals, a current is provided to only one pixel along the power supply line at a time. No current is drawn by any display elements during this time, so that vertical cross talk is avoided. This enables pixel data to be stored accurately on the pixels.

    • In an array (ATC) for temperature controlled cells (TC) the cells are driven in an active matrix array. A temperature processing array may be employed in biochip, such as underneath a biosensor or underneath reaction chambers. Due to the active matrix complex driver circuitry (ADC, DDC) may be positioned outside the actual array of cells. Bach cell is provided with a switch (SE) for coupling the cell circuitry to the driver circuitry. When coupled to the driver circuitry, a memory element (ME) in the cell circuitry may be provided with a heating setting. Then, the cell circuitry is uncoupled from the driver circuitry and a heating element (HE) is controlled to heat the cell in accordance with the setting stored in the memory element.
