    • A method of making a rheology modified aqueous composition, particularly useful for drilling, milling and mining applications, is disclosed, wherein the method includes admixing, with a clay and water, a material whose constituents substantially conform to the proportions of the empirical formula M'mM''n(OH)(2m+3n+qa+br)(Aq)a(Br)b.xH2O, where M' represents at least one divalent metal cation selected from the group consisting of Mg, Ca, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn and m is an amount of from greater than zero to about 8; where M'' represents at least one trivalent metal cation selected from the group consisting of Al, Ga and Fe and n is an amount of from greater than zero to about 6; where A is an anion or negative-valence radical that is monovalent or polyvalent, and a is an amount of A ions of valence q, provided that if A is monovalent, a is from greater than zero to about 8, and if A is polyvalent, a is from greater than zero to about 4; where B is a second anion or negative-valence radical that is monovalent or polyvalent, and where b is an amount of B ions of valence r and b is from zero to about 4; provided (m+n) is greater than or equal to 1; further provided that qa+br cannot be greater than 2m+3n and provided that qa cannot equal 2m+3n; and still further provided that (2m+3n+qa+br) is less than 3; and where xH2O represents excess waters of hydration, with x being zero or more; and where the material is a calcined hydrotalcite and hydrotalcite-like compound, or mixture thereof, wherein the calcinations is carried out in the presence of greater than 1000 ppm of sodium. Optionally, an aluminum oxide, a nitrogen-containing compound, or both may be added. The resulting composition is preferably an elastic solid exhibiting stress-dependent fluidity, desirable temperature resistance, inhibition of reactivity, relatively low cost, and pressure resistance. A dry rheology modification agent composition and a method of making the same is also disclosed.

    • Se describe un metodo para elaborar una composicion acuosa de reologia modificada, particularmente util para aplicaciones de perforacion, molido y minera.     • A rheology modified aqueous fluid composition comprising clay, water, magnesium oxide, aluminum oxide hydroxide, sodium carbonate or potassium carbonate, and calcium oxide or calcium hydroxide. The magnesium oxide and aluminum oxide hydroxide are prepared by a specific thermal treatment protocol involving heating of appropriate precursors within a specified temperature range. The pH of the composition is at least about 10. The composition is prepared by admixing the components and, optionally, sodium oxide or sodium hydroxide for pH adjustment as necessary. A substantially dry rheology modification agent comprising the enumerated components, not including the water, is also included. The resulting composition preferably exhibits shear-thinning capability including very rapid thinning upon application of shear forces and also rapid viscosification upon removal of such forces.

    • An environmentally friendly composition and related methods of use and production of an asphalt prime coat, suitable for application to a base road structure, are described herein. The composition includes an asphaltine, and an emulsion of a natural hydrocarbon resin mixed with a penetrating component, which can include a very limited quantity an organic solvent, or can omit organic solvents. If organic solvents are omitted, a hydrophobic wax can be added for moisture retention and water impermeability. Dispersion agents can be used to facilitate penetration into the base road. Rheology modifying agents and/or alcohols can be used to add flexibility, decrease curing time, and improve thickness and viscosity. The prime coat contains a lower quantity of volatile organic compounds than conventional prime coats, reducing environmental impact. The drying time of the composition is less than alternative compositions. The improved dry time coupled with lower environmental liability can provide significant cost savings.
