    • 639,071. Mounting and lighting burners. SHELL REFINING & MARKETING CO., Ltd., JOYCE, J. R., HARRISON, W. D., WHITE, J. C. S., and TANTAM, D. H. Oct. 30, 1947, No. 29031. [Classes 75 (i) and 75 (iii)] [Also in Group XII, Apparatus for facilitating the removal and replacement of accessories without substantial loss of pressure, through the wall of a vessel maintained at sub- or super-atmospheric pressure, comprises valve or shutter means which when operated closes in a leaf-proof manner an aperture in the wall of the vessel through which an accessory is adapted to extend, sealing means adapted to effect a leak-proof seal between the accessory and the vessel when the accessory is in its operating position, and means co-operating with the accessory to prevent substantial pressure leakage while the accessory is being withdrawn to a point clear of the said valve or shutter means, the latter being arranged to close automatically before the accessory has passed the said point, or releasable means being provided for temporarily retaining the accessory of the said point while the valve or shutter means is closed. A burner tube 15, Fig. 1, passing through the wall 10 of a combustion chamber maintained at sub- or super-atmospheric pressure, may be removed without substantial change of pressure in the chamber by removing a nut 20 at the end of an enclosing sleeve 17 and withdrawing the burner until a collar 21 abuts against a spring-urged latch 25 when a gate valve 13 may then be closed by turning a lever 14. During withdrawal substantial pressure leakage is prevented by the fit of the burner in a bush 11 and of the collar 21 in the sleeve 17. After closure of the gate valve 13 the latch 25 is lifted and the burner is removed from the sleeve 17. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 2, three main burners 31 and 32, 33 (not shown), a pilot burner 34, and a spark igniter 35 are mounted in the end wall 30 of a combustion chamber, the forward ends of the burners and the igniter being surrounded by a shroud 36. Each burner is enclosed in a sleeve 37 and has rotatable thereon at its outer end a sleeve 41 having interrupted threads 42 engaging similar threads in a housing 38. The burner is released by loosening a lock nut 44 and turning the sleeve 41 by its actuating member 43 to disengage the interrupted threads, and is then withdrawn until a groove 52 reaches a latch 50. A plug valve 46 is then closed by turning a lever 47, which also rotates a sector plate 48 having a raised portion which lifts the latch 50 so that the burner cane be removed completely. The pilot burner only has a sleeve 54 in communication with a tube 55 through which air is provided to operate the burner at low load. The igniter 35 makes a sliding fit with the front part of a sleeve 56, the rear part of which receives a collar 70 carrying leaf-proof packing. When combustion has started the igniter is retracted a short distance by means of a rack 57 and pinion 58 so that the sparking electrodes 63 are well within the shroud 36 and protected from the flame. To withdraw the igniter entirely a clamp 67 is released and the igniter complete with retraction gear is withdrawn. When the electrodes 63 pass a ball 62 freely mounted in an elbow 61, the ball drops and mounts a ramp 64 to centre in the mouth of the sleeve 56 forming a gas-tight seal. A further construction is desscribed in which gate valves are mounted on sectorshaped arms pivoted on the combustion chamber wall through which the burners and an igniter tube pass and each burner tube and the igniter have collars provided with packing rings, and are withdrawn in a manner similar to that of the withdrawal of the burner shown in Fig. 1. The valve plates may each comprise a pair of members urged apart by a spring. In the Provisional Specification is described a construction in which the burner tube is moved axially into and out of the combustion chamber by the rotation of a captive nut which engages an external screw thread on the burner tube.

    • 1,042,611. Gas burners. GEO BRAY & CO. Ltd., A WESTERMAN, and D. HARRISON. Jan. 1, 1964 [Jan. 18, 1963], No. 2357/63. Headings F4F and F4T. A gas burner has symmetrically arranged flame ports, each having a diameter of between 0À03 and 0À06 of an inch and being formed in a strip 8, Fig. 1, 2, of heat-resisting metal, each flame port diameter being between 0À8 and 2À0 times the thickness of the strip, and the ports being spaced apart by 2 to 4 times their diameter between their centres. A burner body 5, a mixing tube 4 and injector 3 are carried on a bracket 2, air entering the tube through ports 7. The strip 8 is held in grooves 9 in body 5 and commences in the region 10. The bracket 2 carries injector bodies 14 in which various jets 3 can be inserted, various forms of bodies and jets are given in Figs. 12-21, not shown. The burner is lifted off the body to replace a jet however, the body can be attached to one side of a T-piece, the other being plugged and the stem connected to the gas supply, by removing the plug new jets can be screwed into the body without removing the burner. In Figs. 4-8 not shown, the flame strip extends the whole length of the burner and baffles are used to uniformly distribute the gas/air mixture to the flame ports. Various arrangements of flame ports are given in Figs. 9-11, not shown. The flame strip may be flat, convex or frustoconical. A cross-lighting device 34 for use with several burners comprises a strip of metal with flame ports 35, Fig. 22, and a slot 36, a ribbon of flame being formed at right-angles to the main burner flame to rapidly ignite other burners.

    • 594,156. Hand tools for planting. HARRISON, L. D., and QUARTON, C. F. B. April 12, 1945, No. 9112. [Class 6 (ii)] [Also in Group V] Apparatus for use in transplanting seedlings, which is provided with a cutter-open at the lower side for cutting out a clod of soil, with a ram for pressing a hole in the clod, and with a plate for ejecting the clod, said plate being attached to a pair of reciprocable rods, has the upper ends of said rods connected by a crossmember passing through the tool shaft and engaging with a lever-operated plunger axially slidable within the tool-shaft. A shaft 3 has at the upper end a handle 4 and at the other end an open mould 5 of which the lower edge 5a is sharpened to cut into the compost. Mounted to slide within the shaft is a rod 6 carrying a plunger 7, which is pressed into the mould to form a central hole in the block of soil by operation of a lever 11 passing through a slot 12 in the shaft and pivoted on an arm 14 attached to the shaft. A spring 8 restores the plunger to its original position after operation of the lever 11. On depressing a second lever 21, passing through a slot 3b in the shaft and pivoted to a bracket 23 on the shaft, an ejector plate 15 is actuated. The ejector plate 15, which has sliding fit in the mould 5 is provided with a central aperture for the passage of the plunger 7, and is carried at the lower end of two rods 16 vertically slidable in tubular guides 17 and maintained in the rest position by two springs 18. A cross-bar 19 is slotted through the tops of the rods and through slots 3a in the shaft. A plunger 20 inside the shaft abuts against the lever 21 and is slotted at its lower end to pass over the cross-bar 19. Depression of the lever 21 operates the plunger 20 and hence moves the cross-bar 19 and the rods 16 downwards to press the ejector plate 15 against the container and force it out of the mould.

    • A path game including a generally serpentine path rising from a start to a higher finish. Removably seated adjacent the finish is a top together with a winding and release mechanism for the top. Card play provides for forward and backward movement of tokens, exchange of tokens with opposing players and release of the spinning top. When the mechanism is removed, the top may be readily mounted on the winding and release mechanism for winding. The wound top, together with the winding and release mechanism is then reseated for release upon play of a particular type of card. Upwardly projecting ridges between segment of the path generally provide a guide for downward movement of the released spinning top along the path. Gaps in the ridges provide for movement of the top from one segment of the path to a nonconsecutive segment while skipping intervening consecutive segment and also permit the top to leave the path entirely.
