    • An intermediate steering column (10) for a vehicle with a firewall (14) includes a first shaft (30) pivotally attached to a first U-joint (54) and rotatable about a longitudinal axis (32) of the first shaft upon rotation of the first U-joint. A second shaft (28) drivingly connected to the first shaft (30) has a slip joint connection (42) with the first shaft permitting relative axial movement of the first and second shafts while maintaining a rotary drive connection between the first and second shafts. The first shaft (30) includes first and second shaft parts (60 and 62) and a quick disconnect joint (64) between the first and second shaft parts permitting disconnection of the first and second shaft parts and pivoting of the first shaft part relative to the first U-joint (54) to a first out of the way position and pivoting of the second shaft part relative to a second U-joint (36) to a second out of the way position.

    • A steering column (10) includes a mounting bracket (66) connecting the steering column (10) to a vehicle frame. A support (24), through which a steering column member (12) extends, is connected with the mounting bracket (66). The support (24) supports the steering column member (12) for rotation about and is movable relative to the mounting bracket. A locking mechanism (130) locks the support (24) in any one of a plurality of positions relative to the mounting bracket (66). The locking mechanism (130) has a locking lever (132) with first and second ends (171 and 136). A spring (194) applies a force to the first end (171) of the lever (132) to urge the second end (136) of the lever to clamp the support (24) to the mounting bracket (66). The first end (171) of the lever (132) moves against the force applied by the spring (194) to permit movement of the support (24) relative to the mounting bracket (66).

    • A steering column (10) includes a steering column member (12) rotatable to turn steerable vehicle wheels. A support tube (24) supports the steering column member (12) for rotation about a longitudinal axis (26) of the steering column member. The support tube (24) and the steering column member (12) extend between clamping members (32, 34) and are axially movable relative to the clamping members. The clamping members (32, 34) clamp the support tube (24) to prevent movement of the support tube and the steering column member (12) relative to the clamping members. A pivot shaft (38) pivotally connects the clamping members (32, 34) to a mounting bracket (42). A locking mechanism (78) presses the clamping members (32, 34) toward each other to clamp the support tube (24) to prevent axial movement of the support tube relative to the clamping members. The locking mechanism (18) also locks the clamping members (32, 34) in one of a plurality of pivot positions relative to the mounting bracket (42). The locking mechanism (78) has a locking shaft (82) extending through the clamping members (32, 34) and through side walls (52, 54) of the mounting bracket (42).
