    • An apparatus for trimming a scrap ring from a cylindrical container body and its method of operation. A cylindrical container body, closed at one end and provided with a flange member which extends substantially at right angles to the body at the opposite open end, has a scrap ring trimmed from the flange member. The container body is fed into one of a series of hemispherical pockets of a rotary turret and is then moved laterally thereto with the aid of a vacuum holder that engages the closed end. The open end of a container is presented to a main disk cutter that rotates about its axis continuously and which travels in alignment with one of the hemispherical pockets. A frusto-conical ram is mounted on the main disk cutter and is inserted into the open end of the container to insure its roundness. An auxiliary disk cutter, whose axis is substantially at right angles to the main disk cutter, is mounted on a reciprocable bar member along with a stripper plate. The auxiliary disk cutter engages the opposite side of the container flange that abuts the main disk cutter and is frictionally driven. Trim ring retainer segments mounted adjacent the pockets on the rotary turret cooperate with the stripper plate to hold a severed scrap ring until the auxiliary disk cutter and container body are withdrawn. The stripper plate is then moved away from the trim ring retainer segments permitting the scrap ring to fall into a collection bin. The disk cutters are so positioned and sharpened in such a manner that a cutting burr is transferred to the scrap ring leaving an extremely smooth edge on the flange of the container.

    • A process for sealing underground walls so as to prevent water from seeping through the walls. A hollow pipe is inserted at a first position and a sealant material is injected through the pipe to effect a seal between a footing and the bottom of the wall. The hollow pipe is withdrawn vertically and progressively while injecting additional sealant material. Thereafter, the hollow pipe is indexed laterally and the wall sealed as before from the footing to grade level and this procedure is repeated until the entire underground wall is sealed externally.In a modified form of the invention, the hollow tube is withdrawn and then the sealant is applied through the opening created by the insertion and withdrawal of the hollow tube.

    • Methods of necking-in and flanging tubular can bodies having body walls of constant thickness. A pilot die initially inserted into the tubular can body reverses its direction during the necking-in operation with respect to the motion of a ring die member that contacts the exterior surface of the tubular can body member. This concurrent reverse movement of the two forming dies eliminates wrinkles in the necked-in region and produces a container body with increased columnar strength. Repetitive use of the method produces containers with two or three necked-in portions. A method is also disclosed for relubricating the necked-in area of the tubular can body between the successive necking stations.

    • A can end trimmer has a main rotary support shaft with a radial turret plate. A plurality of self-contained cutter unit cartridge assemblies have radial head flanges directly connectable to one side of the turret plate with driven members in each cutter unit cartridge automatically engaging control members mounted on the turret plate for effecting movement of a transversely shiftable cutter knife into engagement with an axially fixed cutter knife for effecting rotation of both knives to trim the end from a can held in a vacuum chuck. A shim between the cutter unit cartridge and the turret plate cants the axes of the knife members with respect to the can by a very small amount normally less than 2.0 degrees to effect a smooth burr-free cut of the can end. Stripper pin means surrounds the can being cut which in turn surrounds the axially fixed knife with a reciprocating stripper plate on the pins being easily removed during replacement of the cutter cartridge unit. Substantial space is saved by the arrangement of the units on the turret plate so that a large number of cutter cartridge units can be employed on a support shaft of a given size.

    • An easy open can end construction and method of making it. The pull tab and tear strip remain fully locked onto the can end, and the opening strip does not dip into the beverage. Bead members positioned externally of the tear strip not only preserve a desired orientation of the pull tab with respect to the tear strip but also serve as a guard against the user's face or tongue contacting the raw edge left after lifting the tear strip. The tear strip itself is provided with one or more protective pads to protect the user's face. A sanitary cover member overlies the tear strip and is rolled up with the pull tab and tear strip becoming interlocked therewith. A method of making the score line pattern is included so that tearing occurs along a single side of the bottom of the score line pattern to avoid a zigzag tear pattern which is dangerous to the user's tongue or lips. Finally, a method of making a rivet is included in which two metal thicknesses are joined together to avoid a leaking problem encountered in single metal thickness rivets.
