    • 449,047. Sight - - testing apparatus. MARTIN, L. C., 95, Nightingale Lane, Bromley, Kent. April 2, 1935, No. 10199. [Class 97 (i)] A lantern for use in testing colour vision consists of a casing containing a lamp and a rotatable carrier bearing a number of colour filters which can be brought selectively into register with a display aperture in the casing, the carrier also having a number of filteridentifying symbols of which that appropriate to the filter in the display aperture is visible through an observation opening in the casing. As shown, the apparatus comprises a casing 1 containing a lamp 2 and a, revoluble annular carrier 3 bearing a number of colour filters 4 which can be brought into register one, or two, at a time with an aperture 5, the carrier 3 being mounted on a shaft 12 projecting into a base-chamber 9 and provided with a hand wheel 16. Mounted coaxially with the carrier 3 is a segmental member 6 having a series of stop-apertures of different sizes which can also be brought one, or two, at a time into register with the aperture 5, the member 6 being rotatable by a handle 20 within the chamber 9. The members 3, 6 are provided with notches co-operating with detents to determine the amplitude of each angular displacement. Between the casing 1 and the member 6 is a slide 32 which carries neutral filters 33 and can be moved vertically by a knob 38 to bring these filters opposite the aperture 5. Below the series of filters 4, the carrier 3 is provided with indicator discs 30, 35 bearing symbols which are observable through an aperture 31 of the casing 1. The lamp 2 is surrounded by a cylindrical reflector 26 having an aperture 27 in radial alignment with the aperture 5. Within the chamber 9 is a small lamp 36 projecting light through a window 37 on to a writing pad whereon the examiner records the answers of the person examined, who preferably views in a mirror the colours projected through the aperture 5. The apparatus is particularly intended for testing the colour vision of navigators &c., the filters 4 and apertures in the member 6 being so pitched apart and selected as to represent port and starboard lights at varying distances.

[Class 40 (iii).] Slowly moving objects are scanned at an abnormally low frame-frequency and each of the reproduced pictures is projected for a correspondingly long time. Thus a Nipkow disc at the transmitter may complete only four frames instead of the usual sixteen per second ; and the number of scanning-lines can be proportionately increased, or the speed of the scanning-spot reduced. At the receiver the picture is reproduced, by means of a Kerr-cell light-valve and a mirror drum, on a kinematograph film which is projected in such a manner that each constituent picture is exhibited for four times as long as usual ; alternatively the film may comprise four successive copies of each picture or frame and be operated at the usual speed. If the light-valve comprises a doubleimage prism in combination with a Kerr cell, one moving light-spot may be projected on to the film and the other, for monitoring purposes, on to a screen surfaced with phosphorescent material such as a Lenard phosphor; and in order that the moving spot may itself be invisible, it may consist of ultra-violet light, or light of a colour complementary to that of the screen. The light-valve may be adjusted to give a positive or negative picture or (if a double-image prism is employed) both.

    • 411,204. Garden frames; poultry houses. DAVIES, C. M., Brewery House, Harlow, Essex. Jan. 4, 1933, No. 307. [Class 20 (i).] A sectional greenhouse, horticultural frame, poultry house, or invalid shelter, comprises two rectangular side-lights 1, 2 arranged with their upper edges in contact and their lower edges spaced apart, and an end light 8 at one or both ends, the frames of the lights having one or more upstanding projections around which a securing cord 7 or the like may be passed. The frames are glazed with a transparent or semi-transparent material and their lower ends rest on the ground or on low concrete walls. In the construction shown, the end lights are constituted by two triangular frames 9 the sides 10 and 11 of which are of unequal lengths. The lateral frame members of the side lights are formed with projections 5, 5 , the latter being formed integral with the frame and the former consisting of a separate member which is secured to the frame. One frame is recessed at 15 for the reception of the projection of the other frame and both frames are bevelled at 14 so that they fit closely together at any angular position of the frames. The cord 7 is passed around the projections 5, 5 and also around the projections 12 or 13 of the end lights. The latter may be arranged with their longer sides 10 in contact to provide a relatively high and narrow structure. The frames may be glazed with a material known under the Registered Trade Mark "Windowlite."

    • The present invention concerns a method for controlling the charge of an accumulator (4), as a function of the time during which said accumulator (4) has been on a charger (2), said accumulator (4) being intended to power an horological function and one or more auxiliary functions (14), this method being characterized in that it includes the steps of: incrementing a step counting signal during the charge time during which the accumulator (4) is on the charger (2); causing the accumulator (4) charge to stop when the counting signal has reached a previously defined maximum value corresponding to the nominal charge of said accumulator (4); and decrementing the step counting signal during the discharge time during which the accumulator (4) is not on the charger (2), the counting signal being decremented by a first step when only the horological function is being used, and by a second step which differs from the first and which depends on the auxiliary function or functions (14) used.
