    • There is disclosed a portable GPS (Global Positioning System) receiver carried by a user. The receiver measures the distance traveled by the user and the speed. In the prior art technique, if satellites cannot be captured, no measurements are made. To find the distance and speed accurately, the measurements have to be performed continuously, thus increasing the electric power consumed by the receiver. The inventive receiver once finds the speed from the Doppler frequencies of the carrier waves. Then, a first distance-calculating means finds the distance from the speed. A walk-detecting means detects walking. A step number-calculating means accumulates the number of steps taken in steps. A stride-calculating means finds the stride from the accumulated step number and from the found distance. Then, a second distance-calculating means finds the distance from the stride and from the accumulated number of steps. A speed-calculating means finds the speed. The GPS receiver receives at regular intervals and updates the stride.

    • An electronic combined pulse meter and pedometer may be provided with only a single sensor used for determining walking pace and pulse rate. A pulse wave detector detects a pulse wave of the user and outputs a corresponding pulse wave signal to a calculating circuit and a walking state detector. The walking state detector compares the detected pulse wave with a reference level stored in a pulse wave level memory and outputs a walking state signal if the level of the detected pulse wave exceeds the reference level. Calculation control circuitry selects various constant values pre-stored in a constant value memory based upon the walking state signal and outputs the selected constant values to the calculating circuit and a display device. The calculating circuit calculates the time interval between successive pulses of the detected pulse wave signal in accordance with a clock signal and the selected constant values, and outputs the result to the display device.

    • An electronic timepiece which has storage means storing the positions of the pointers and controls the drive of the pointers.A transfer means acts to transfer data between a first pointer position storage means and a second pointer position storage means. A drive-stopping means activates the transfer means. At this time, the transfer means transfers the positional data stored in the first pointer position storage means to the second pointer position storage means. If the output from a voltage comparator means indicates that the supply voltage exceeds a threshold voltage value set by a threshold voltage value-setting means, then a starting control means transfers the data stored in the second pointer position storage means to the first pointer position storage means.

    • A tide meter for calculating a spring tide day. First, a moon age value is determined depending on a designated calendar. The moon age value includes at least one of the day of the new moon and the day of the full moon. Tidal data is stored that is specific for each geographic location, and this data is used in calculating the spring tide day for a selected geographic area. Since the time of the rising and falling of the tide depends on geographic location, simply calculating a spring tide day from the position of the moon and sun may not be accurate for a specific geographic location. Accordingly, the stored tidal data that corresponds to a selected geographic area is included in the spring tide day calculation. Thus, the accuracy of the spring tide day calculation is increased for the particular selected geographic area.

    • The invention provides a wrist-worn pulse wave measuring device capable of outputting data measured by the wrist-worn pulse wave measuring device to an external data processing device without using a large device body. In the pulse information processing apparatus, a connector piece of a sensor unit is mounted to a connector of a wrist-worn pulse wave measuring device when measuring the pulse. A data transmission connector piece is mounted to the connector of the pulse wave measuring device when transmitting data with a data processor. Whether the operating mode is the pulse measurement mode or the data transmission mode is determined by a signal discriminator which discriminates the signal input from the connector of the pulse wave measuring device.

    • A self-chargeable timepiece includes a pair of small and large capacitors having respective small and large capacities and selectively disconnectably connected at their respective terminals to time-keeping circuitry and a solar cell. The pair of small and large capacitors cooperate with each other during the momentary operation of the solar cell for selectively receiving and storing the electric charge to develop respective terminal voltages across their respective terminals even after the momentary operation of the solar cell. A detector periodically detects the terminal voltages of the small and large capacitors during the time-keeping operation. A switching circuit responds to the detected terminal voltages for selectively connecting and disconnecting the small and large capacitors to and from the time-keeping circuitry to enable the small and large capacitors to selectively power the time-keeping circuitry. A regulating circuit operates when the time-keeping circuitry is powered by the small capacitor for regulating the detector to effect the periodical detection of the terminal voltages at relatively short time intervals and operates when the time-keeping circuit is powered by the large capacitor for regulating the detector to effect the periodical detection of the terminal voltages at relatively long time intervals.
