Milling - cutters. - The teeth of milling- cutters and like tools are welded into slots in the body, which is of less expensive metal, such as mild steel. The lower corners C are rounded and a backing of metal D is built up behind each tooth from a welding rod, the backing being united by fusion both to the teeth and the body. The process may be carried out electrically, or by oxyacteylene welding or otherwise.

Self - aligning roller bearings; thrust bearings; spring supports.-A selfaligning roller bearing for colliery waggons or tubs and the like comprises a housing formed in two parts each of substantially semi-cylindrical shape, provided with projections fitting within recesses in a supporting frame, which latter is provided with a bracket to take end thrust. As shown in Figs. 2 and 6, the halves a, a of the housing are provided with projections a , a fitting respectively in recesses in a band c and a base b secured together and to the vehicle by bolts c . A bracket e projecting from the base b takes the end thrust of the shaft. Springs c may be mounted on the bolts c , us shown in Fig. 13, in order to take up shocks. In the form shown in Fig. 10, projections a are formed on the sides of the upper part a of the housing, and a projection a on the lower part a . The supporting frame comprises a pedestal e with detachable portions e , e . The bracket e taking end thrust is formed on the pedestal e. A cage for the rollers is made in halves, each comprising slotted plates f , f , Fig. 16, riveted together. Fig. 19 shows a modified form in which slotted plates h . h are arranged to support the axles of the rollers.

The stopper E is provided with a packing-ring e of india-rubber or the like, and is carried by a ball F pivoted to a bent lever G, pivoted at h, h to the neck of the can, and so arranged that by means of it pressure can be put on the stopper E to hold it in place.

A housing strap e passes underneath the axle and between flanges f on the block a to permit vertical movement of the latter, the ends of the strap abutting against turned down ends g of the base plate c to which it is bolted ; the strap e where it passes under the axle is cut away or reduced in width to allow greasing. Modified constructions of bearing block are described.

[Classes 125 (i) and 125 (iii).] A stopper for use with bottles containing poison comprises a plug 5 having a head 6 provided with marginal notches in which are disposed wings 9, 10 on the lower ends of which are lugs 16, 17 and which are connected bv a helical compression spring 13 passing through a diametrical bore in the plug. When the stopper is in position the lugs 16, 17 engage recesses 18 in the bottle neck. To remove the stopper the wings are pressed inwardly at their centre parts, their ends 19 fulcrum against the uprising boss 7 and the lugs are disengaged from the recesses. A cap 20, secured by bayonet slots &c., may cover the stopper.

Golf-practising appliances.-Relates to a golfpractising device of the type in which the ball to be struck is connected to the outer end N of a spring-retained draw-rod A, which is guided by a member D pivoted at its inner end I to a base E, the length of flight of the ball being indicated by a slide C on the member D and its direction on a quadrant H, and consists in arranging the device so that the ball is driven directly over it, a flange Q being provided on the base to protect the mechanism, and in the provision of springs G to take up the sideway throw of the member D, and slides F mounted on the quadrant H to indicate the extent of such throw. The member D may be graduated to indicate the distance in yards the ball would have travelled had it been unimpeded, and the quadrant H the distance out of straight per 100 yards of flight. The base E may be screwed down, or may be provided with. spikes K for insertion into the ground.
