Corrugating; stamping and embossing.-Relates to machines for making metal caps or covers, of the kind described in Specification No. 19,554, A.D. 1898, for closing bottles, fruit jars, &c., such caps having their rims corrugated, and being formed with internal projections adapted to engage with bayonet-joint grooves in the necks of the vessels. The cap blanks are placed on the corrugated mandrel C, and have their rims corrugated between the mandrel and the fluted roller L, the internal projections being formed on the cap by the dies L on the roller acting in conjunction with the recesses D' in the dies D . The latter dies are pivoted at D in the mandrel C, and are held in operative position by the shoulder E of the boss E on the sliding rod E. The dies are released from the finished cap by moving the rod E to the right by means of the lever F. The shafts B, K of the mandrel C and roller L are connected through the spur gearing G, J, J , J , the shaft K &c. being mounted on the pivoted bearing-piece I, so that, by operating the lever P, the roller can be moved away from the mandrel to permit the insertion and removal of the caps.

Bottle necks, making.-Relates to a tool for shaping or finishing the necks of glass bottles &c. so as to form on the outside of the neck devices for engaging with a cap. The central stem B of the tool is shown detached in Fig. 4. The operative parts of the tool consist of mould sections K, which close about the neck and are free to rotate on the stem of the tool, and expanding fingers N, which turn with the tool and act upon the inside of the neck so as to force the glass into the mould. The fingers N turn on pins M fixed in the slotted cylindrical stem B', and move in the slot B . Outwardly-acting springs D normally keep the fingers closed together, but when the grip levers C, C are closed against the pressure of the spring D, the pins C , having reached the ends of the slots N , close the lower extensions of the fingers so as to expand the latter against the glass. The mould sections are, however, first closed by the action of the following parts of the mechanism :-The pins C are connected by links H with a sleeve G. Sleeves F, E, secured together, are free to rotate and slide on the cylinder B', and also to rotate within the sleeve G, which has ball races at its edges. Lugs F projecting from the sleeve F have cam-grooves F , which, when the sleeve F rises as the levers C are closed, force outwards the arms K , and close the mould sections together. The arms K are pivoted at J to a sleeve J free to turn but not to slide upon the cylinder B . A flanged sleeve J forms a gauge or stop for the neck of the bottle when placed within the mould sections. In removing the tool, the fingers close together before the mould sections open.

摘要： A method, apparatus and kit for precisely and accurately determining the volume of a liquid aliquot which can be used to calibrate a liquid delivery device. Two dye-containing solutions, a sample solution and a diluent solution, are prepared such that each solution contains a different dye, with the solutions having different absorbance values at a first wavelength and at a second wavelength. The absorbance value of a known volume of diluent solution is measured at both wavelengths. Either one aliquot of sample solution is added to the diluent solution and then absorbance measurements are made at both wavelengths, or multiple aliquots of sample solution are mixed serially into the diluent solution and then absorbance measurements are made at both wavelengths after each aliquot is added. The volume of any single aliquot is calculated by using a two-step formula which is based on the Beer-Lambert law.

Among other elements, the apparatus includes a liquid handling device having one or more channel members, each of which has a removable liquid holding tip attached, and a signal transmitting device. A signal transmitted from the signal transmitting device may be used in a variety of ways to yield information regarding the performance of the apparatus. This information may be provided via direct detection of the signal by an operator of the apparatus. Alternatively, the signal may be detected by a programmable signal detecting device, interpreted by the apparatus, and then displayed in a form that is understandable to the operator. Furthermore, the liquid holding tip may be modified to enable different forms of signal transmission.
