    • A building is constructed in a method (1) by constructing in a factory a number of pods, transporting them to the site, placing them one atop the other and side-by-side to provide the rooms, and then erecting external cladding and a roof. The pods are complete, with no need for internal work to be performed. Moreover, they provide the building structure, and so there is no need for any structural work to be done on site other than providing a ground-level floor and a stair or elevator cores. Vertical load is transferred down through load-bearing structural walls (32), primarily through box- section steel vertical studs (61), and also through structural ceiling trusses (33) and structural floors (31). The extent of work done on site is considerably reduced in comparison with conventional construction methods, giving better quality, much reduced construction time, less waste, less disruption to nearby premises or roads or footpaths.

    • At least part of the length of a tidal enclosure wall (1) is formed by erecting parallel spaced-apart panels (2) upright in the sea bed (B), capped by cap beams (3). The panels are inter-linked by tie bars (5) extending across the wall and through the panels (2), and being secured by high strength couplers (8) on the outer surfaces of the panels (2). Infill (4) is retained between the panels (2). The wall (1) is topped by a compacted fill (6) and top soil (7), which is planted with a suitable vegetation of a variety for best environmental integration. Rock armour (10) is deposited on the outer sides of the panels (2), for additional wall support and preventing scouring. The panels (2) are of pre-cast reinforced concrete material, and have dimensions of 14m high x 6m long x 0.5m wide in this example. Some sections of the wall may include anchor bars (32) extending down through a panel and into the sea bed to provide an additional lateral restraint. The method of constructing a tidal wall is relatively fast because the panels can be erected with established jetting and excavation practices. It is particularly convenient if dredged material can be used for the infill. The wall can form a tidal enclosure when erected along a shore, thus providing for power generation without need to build a barrage across an estuary.

    • A structural module (1) comprising a structural floor (2), load bearing walls(3, 16), and a structural ceiling (5), arranged to support other structural modules (l)in a multi-storey building. The load-bearing walls comprise a structural frame (4) and lightweight concrete (20) between the frame members. The concrete has a density in the range of 400kg/m
      3 and 600kg/m
3 , and is cellular, including air entrainment. The concrete is moulded between the frame members, completely filling voids between the frame members along the plane of the wall, and the structural walls are configured so that when two modules are juxtaposed there is a combined wall comprising a cavity between the structural modules. The structural walls (3) may lined on at least one side by MgO boards (21), the lightweight concrete and the boards providing at least two hours fire resistance. There may be a vertical socket (32) at a corner for engagement with a dowel pin (33) of an upper or lower adjoining module. The module may comprise a tie plate (30) configured to be secured to a plurality of other modules at a corner, the plate (30) comprising a through hole for receiving a dowel pin (33) of an adjoining module.

    • Structural frames (SF1, SF2 ...) are fabricated. They are placed in a mould base (2), and a boom (30) is operated to push a number of them together for optimum use of mould cavity space. A back cover (35) is driven in at 90° to the boom (30). Ducts (16) are controlled by valves (7) to selectively inject pre-expanded EPS beads so that specific parts of the frame are excluded. Integral insulation forms around the desired parts of the frame upon injection of steam through slits (15). The moulding machine is controlled by code generated (80) from intermediate, universal code generated (75) from design data, and also used to generate other control code (76-78).
