    • The infeed grate consists of grate blocks (1) arranged in rows placed side-by-side and extending in the direction of movement of the fuel, said grate blocks being secured mutually overlapping on grate beams (2, 3) inclined downwardly and parallel in said direction, every other of the grate beams (2) belonging to a first set and the remaining grate beams (3) belonging to a second set of grate beams.     • Solid and possibly liquid waste material is incinerated by a) partial combustion on the stepped grates (9, 10, 11) of the solid waste material, the latter being delivered to the rotary kiln (2) at such a high temperature, that a liquid slag is formed at the inlet of the rotary kiln, b) possibly adding liquid waste material to the solid waste material being incinerated on the stepped grates (9, 10, 11), and c) collecting the ash products from the combustion process, such as grate screenings, boiler ash, fly ash, and residual products from flue-gas cleaning, and returning these products to the input end (12) of the rotary kiln (2), at which input end these products are introduced into the liquid slag. In this manner, it is achieved that the slag, fly ash and other harmful residual products from the combustion process are fused into a glass-like mass, from which salts and heavy metal cannot be leached out.

When heat-transmission medium is circulated through the ducts, temperature differences along the length of the beam are balanced, so that the difference in width between its two ends caused by temperature differences is minimized.     • In a refuse-incinerating plant of the kind comprising: a) a rotary kiln (1); and b) an after-burning device (4, 7) situated at the material-discharge end (2) of said rotary kiln (1) and having means for supplying air (11) for the after-burning process and means (10) for removing burned-out refuse, the novel features are: c) that said after-burning device comprises at least one grate (7) adapted to move material received from said material-discharge end (2), at least part of said grate (7) being placed below said material-discharge end (2); and d) that said means for supplying air (11) for the after-burning process is/are adapted to introduce said air above and/or below said grate (7). With this arrangement, highly economical incineration of e.g. hospital waste containing infectious material is achieved without risk of some of the material not being completely sterilized.
