    • Diagnostic instruments, systems and methods for performing measurements on eyes are disclosed. In one embodiment of the instrument, a left ocular is disposed in a portion of a left visual path for the left eye, the left ocular positioned to permit the left eye to view a target, a right ocular is disposed in a portion of a right visual path for the right eye, the right ocular positioned to permit the right eye to view a target. The instrument can also include a wavefront sensor disposed on a translation stage, the wavefront sensor having an optical path to an imaging sensor, the translation stage being movable to position the optical path of the wavefront sensor in alignment with the portion of the left visual path in a first state and in alignment with the portion of the right visual path in a second state. One or more light sources are optionally provided for propagating light along a least part of the left and right visual paths to illuminate the left and right eyes.

    • A progressive addition lens design device for designing progressive addition lenses to permit a patient to experience a variety of distance vision fields and reading vision fields. The device includes a frame adapted to hold in place in front of each of a patient's eyes three lens mounts, each lens mounts being adapted for adjustment in rotation and side-to-side translation. A third lens displaying the patient's base prescription mounted in one of the lens. A first and second lens is mounted in the other two lens mounts. The first and second lenses, each have a transition zone and a power ramp zone and they have complementary surfaces so that when stacked together they create a standard progressive addition lens with a distance vision field, a reading vision field and transition region. When the first and second lenses are moved relative to each other the locations of the distance vision field, the reading vision field and the transition region are adjusted allowing the patient to experience a variety of distance vision fields, reading vision fields, and transition regions

    • A low inventory method of making eyeglasses. Two lens elements having special complementary surfaces are provided. These lens elements can be positioned relative to each other to provide wide ranges of focus correction and astigmatism correction. Various preferred embodiments of the invention are described. In one embodiment the required inventory is only identical sets of two complementary lenses for providing correction for almost all needed eye correction for a typical population. In this embodiment, the lens units are first adjusted relative to each other to provide a desired focusing power. Astigmatism may be corrected by a small adjustment in a second direction perpendicular to the first direction followed by a rotation of the two lenses about the axis of the two lenses. When the adjustments have been made the two lenses are fixed with respect to each other and installed in eyeglass frames. Cutting to the shape of the eyeglass frames can occur either before or after the fixing.
