    • Wired glass is made from a web of wire, formed from longitudinal and transverse strands welded together at their sections, by feeding the web into the narrow end of a "bolster" of molten glass which, in plan, is of tapering form, the transverse strands being thus heated progressively along their length so that the relative expansion between adjacent strands is so small that deformation of the web is avoided. A stream of molten glass 8 is fed from a furnace between casting rolls 5, 6 and over an apron 10 to a second pair of casting rolls 11, 12. A second stream of molten glass 14 is fed along a spout 13 which may be of shallow V-shape in cross-section so that a greater amount is fed along the middle than the sides. This second stream is fed over the roll 11 and forms a "bolster" of V-shape on the first stream, the apex of the V pointing in a direction contrary to the flow of the stream, the formation of the V-shape being aided by water-cooled guides 17 supported above the stream. The wire web 2 is fed by a spiked roller 22 under the guides 17 into the apex of the V and is thus incorporated into the ribbon of glass. In a modification, the second stream is confined to a narrow width in the centre of the first stream and spreads out sideways to form the " bolster." Auxiliary heaters at the sides of the stream may be provided to ensure uniform heating. According to a further modification, the end of the spout 13 is a straight line inclined to the direction of flow so as to form a straight " bolster." Other alternative forms of spout are also described. Corrugated or patterned ribbon may be produced. Specification 769,692 is referred to.

    • In the manufacture of cellular glass, a mixture 23 of powdered vitreous or glass-forming materials and a foaming agent is fed, as by a conveyer 24, at a controlled rate on to a static support 2 which is not wettable by molten glass or on to a ribbon (51) of glass advanced along the support at a controlled rate to form a layer 29 of substantially uniform thickness which is continuously advanced and heated sufficiently to cause the mixture to cohere and foam, as at 31, to form a ribbon 32 of cellular glass which is cooled as it is advanced. The support may, as shown, be a molten metal bath 1 but alternatives given are a carbon channel or a gaseous film. As shown, reinforcing wire 42 may be introduced from a reel 40 over rollers 44 into the pass between the end roller 26 of conveyer 24 and a guide roller 30 which advances the layer 29 along the surface. When the mixture 23 is fed on to a ribbon (51) of glass, advanced on a molten tin bath 1, the feed hopper (52) is mounted in the roof structure over the bath and an intermediate particulate layer of a decorative material, such as enamel frit, copper, copper and titanium, aluminium, ground quartz or mica, is introduced from a hopper (59) before the mixture 23. A number of suitable mixtures for the cellular glass and foaming agents are given, including loess or soda-lime-silica cullet with ferric oxide and carbon, sodium or calcium sulphate with carbon or calcium carbonate. Carbon may be used on its own when the powdered glass contains, e.g. a sulphate, arsenate, antimonate, sulphite, thiosulphate or peroxide. Colouring agents may be added, e.g. chromic oxide, cobalt oxide, calcium sulphide or ceramic pigments.

    • An integrated circuit comprises a digital phase-locked loop for a wireless communications unit. The digital phase-locked loop comprises a voltage controlled oscillator and a digital tuning subsystem. An input of the digital tuning subsystem receives the output signal from the voltage controlled oscillator, and an output of the digital tuning subsystem is supplied to the voltage controlled oscillator. A digital voltage generator is adapted to store at least two predetermined forcing voltages. The digital voltage generator is adapted to select one of the at least two predetermined forcing voltages, in dependence on a current temperature value, and to supply it as a forcing voltage to an input of the voltage controlled oscillator, prior to the phase locked loop achieving lock. A wireless communication unit and a method of tuning a phase-locked loop are also provided.
