    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing silica sol having a high hardness and providing a hard film having excellent adhesiveness to the surface of a base material; and to provide a method for forming the hard film by which the hard film can be formed on the surface of the base material by using the silica sol produced by the method.
      SOLUTION: The method for producing the silica sol involves hydrolyzing a silicone compound represented by the general formula: R

      1 is hydrogen, a 1-10C hydrocarbon group or a 1-10C organic group having a substituent; R
      2 is hydrogen, a 1-10C hydrocarbon group or a 1-10C acyl group; and n is an integer of 0-3) by bringing a solution of the silicone compound into a basic condition. The method for forming the hard film comprises coating the silica sol produced by the production method on the surface of the base material, and subjecting the silica sol coated on the surface of the base material to curing treatment.
