    • A snare for deployment or retrieval of an implantable medical apparatus. The snare includes a shaft, and a tip distal of the shaft. The tip includes an extendable member capable of self-centering the implantable apparatus during a deployment or retrieval. The extendable member is selectively receivable in the tip, distally extendable from the tip, and rotatable relative to the tip. An activatable handle is engaged with the shaft. A wire has an end engaged with the handle and an end engaged with the tip. Upon activation, the wire is urged in a proximal direction, resulting in a flexure of the tip. An elongated mechanism has a proximal portion engaged with the handle, and a distal portion engaged with the tip extendable member. The elongated mechanism is configured for selectively controlling the receiving, deploying, and rotating of the extendable member.

    • An assembly and method for continuous blockage of a nerve in a patient. The assembly includes a needle comprising a hollow needle conduit having a shaft portion and a tip portion, a generally non-conductive layer disposed along a length of the conduit shaft portion, and an echogenic surface extending along at least a portion of the needle. A catheter having a bore for transmittal of an anesthetic to the nerve is receivable in the shaft portion of said needle. Following insertion of the needle tip in the vicinity of the nerve by electrical nerve stimulation and ultrasound visualization, the catheter is passed through the needle conduit such that the distal end of the catheter extends beyond the distal tip of the needle. The catheter has an echogenic portion, such as a ribbon wrapped around the distal end of the catheter, and the catheter echogenic portion is guidable in the vicinity of the nerve under ultrasound imaging. Following placement of the catheter, the needle may be removed, leaving the catheter in position for delivering continuous, spaced doses of the anesthetic over a selected period of time.

    • An assembly for joining two vessel segments of a patient comprises a coupler formed of adjoining coupler halves, and a cuff having a large diameter portion and a small diameter portion. Each of the coupler halves includes an aperture for receiving an end of one of the vessel segments. One of the coupler halves comprises a connector element sized and shaped for connection to the other coupler half. The vessel segments are alignable in the respective coupler halves such that a path for fluid flow is formed therebetween upon connection of the coupler halves. The large diameter portion of the cuff is positioned over at least a portion of the coupler, and the small diameter portion of the cuff is positioned over one of the vessel segments. The cuff further includes a probe positioned at the small diameter portion. The probe is positioned within the cuff in a manner such that a signal is receivable therein corresponding to fluid flow through the vessel segment.

    • A cuff assembly for placement around a body vessel comprises a cuff member sized to substantially surround the body vessel, and a tether assembly engaged with the cuff member. The tether assembly is sized to at least substantially encircle the cuff member, and includes a locking mechanism for releasably maintaining a selected tension when the tether assembly encircles the cuff member. The tether assembly may comprise a tether and a tab, wherein the tab is engaged with the cuff member and has an aperture therethrough. The distal end of the tether is engaged with the tab. The locking mechanism may comprise a plurality of stop members disposed along a surface of the tether. The stop members are sized relative to the aperture to enable passage of at least a portion of the tether therethrough to encircle the cuff member when the stop members are aligned at a first angle relative to the aperture, and to substantially fix a position of the tether at a tension around the cuff member when the stop members are aligned at a second angle relative to the aperture.

    • A device for removing from a patient a previously implanted elongated structure, such as a pacemaker lead or a defibrillator lead, that may be encapsulated in biological tissue of the patient. In one form, the device comprises a sheath member having an inside dimension greater than the outside dimension of the elongated structure, and a gripping member positioned about the sheath member. The gripping member has a longitudinal passage extending substantially therethrough, which longitudinal passage is dimensioned to encircle at least a portion of the elongated structure. A proximal portion of the gripping member may extend outwardly beyond the proximal end of the elongated structure and outwardly of at least the vascular system of the patient. The gripping member may comprise a first configuration having a first diameter that is greater than the outside dimension of the elongated structure, and a second configuration having a second diameter that is substantially the same as the outside dimension of the elongated structure.

    • An iris-type valve assembly for controlling a flow of fluid. The assembly comprises a base member, a rotatable member, and an elongated elastomeric valve sheath. The distal end of the valve sheath is secured to the base member and the proximal end of the valve sheath is secured to the rotatable member. At least one of the vale sheath ends includes a flange that is secured to a valve-receiving surface of the base member or the rotatable member. The base member and the rotatable member are aligned to define an elongated passageway therethrough for passage of an interventional device, and the elastomeric valve sheath is disposed along the passageway and has a longitudinal opening therethrough for passage of the interventional device. Upon rotation of the rotatable member relative to the base member the longitudinal opening of the valve sheath is selectively constrictable to comprise a seal around the interventional device. The assembly may be provided with ratcheting members to inhibit recoil of the rotatable member, and rib members along the inner surface of the valve sheath to enhance the seal provided by the assembly.
