    • Novel starch-based glue paste compositions are disclosed composed of (i) a carrier paste containing 5 to 16 wt% of a starch selected from the group consisting of corn starch, wheat starch, rye starch, oat starch, barley starch, potato starch, tapioca starch and pea starch, each being native starch or chemically modified starch, or any mixture thereof and (ii) a main paste with a total starch content of 25 to 50 wt% composed of a mixture of 10 to 30 wt% native rice starch or an acetylated version thereof having an amylose content of 12 to 20 wt%, 1 wt% other compounds and a complementary amylopectin content of 87 to 79 wt%, and 90 to 70 wt% of a starch or mixture of starches selected from the above defined group. Processes for the manufacture of the novel glue paste compositions based on the Stein-Hall method are disclosed, as well as a premix of starches for said manufacture. The glue paste compositions present excellent film forming and glueing properties and are particularly suitable for the manufacture of laminated corrugated board.

    • Pharmaceutical compositions are disclosed that present synergistic anti-cancer effects in humans and vertebrate animals, comprising a combination of a fermentable dietary fiber (FDF) which is a fructan and a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with cyclo-oxygenase2 (COX2) inhibiting activity, the FDF being present in the FDF/NSAID combination in a weight ratio FDF: NSAID of minimum 1:1. Typical compositions comprise a FDF/NSAID combination wherein the FDF component is chicory inulin, oligofructose or a mixture thereof, and the NSAID component is sulindac, piroxicam or aspirin. The synergistic ant-cancer effects of the compositions are demonstrated in aberrant crypt foci studies in rats. The pharmaceutical compositions are useful in the prevention and inhibition of carcinogenesis or recurrence of cancer and for the treatment of cancer in humans and vertebrate animals. The invention also relates to a method for prevention or inhibition of carcinogenesis and recurrence of cancer and for the treatment of cancer in humans and vertebrate animals involving administration of a therapeutically effective dose of said pharmaceutical compositions to a human or vertebrate animal.

    • The use is disclosed of an inulin-type fructan for the manufacture of cosmetic rinse-off compositions for the treatment of the hair and/or the skin. The compositions comprise, apart from conventional ingredients in conventional amounts, from 0.10 to 10% of the inulin-type fructan, and are free from (i) cationic polymers, (ii) terpolymers comprising a non-ionic monomer bearing a urethane group, and (iii) polysaccharides that are different from inulin-type fructan.Typical rinse-off compositions in accordance with the invention are also free from monosaccharides and from di- and oligosaccharides that are different from inulin-type fructan, apart from the mono- and disaccharides that naturally occur in inulin-type fructan. The inulin-type fructan, which is biodegradable and has no eutrophic effects on surface waters, can be used to completely substitute cationic polymeric conditioning agents in conventional cosmetic rinse-off compositions. Novel rinse-off compositions are also disclosed.
