    • An endoscopic surgical instrument for deploying a two part fastener having a male fastener part and a female fastener part, includes a tube having a proximal end and a distal end. An end effector is coupled to said distal end of said tube and is configured to hold the male fastener part and the female fastener part in opposed relation. An actuator is coupled to said proximal end of said tube and is configured to actuate the end effector. A shearing device may be positioned proximate the end effector to shear off a tip of the male fastener part after the male and female fastener parts are moved into locking relation. In addition, the surgical instrument may include a male fastener part having a shaft with a plurality of detent positions. Further, the male fastener part may include a base and a shaft pivotally connected to the base.

    • An endoscopic surgical instrument (10) includes a proximal handle assembly (12) coupled to a relatively long coil (20) and to a relatively long pull wire (22) extending through the long coil (20), and a distal jaw assembly (14) coupled to a relatively short coil (58) and to a relatively short pull wire (60) extending through the short coil (58). The distal ends of the long coil (20) and pull wire (22) are provided with a first coupling device (40), and the proximal ends of the short coil (58) and pull wire (60) are provided with a second coupling device (70) which is mated with the first coupling device (40). The first and second coupling devices (40, 70) couple the distal end of the long coil (20) with the proximal end of the short coil (58), and the distal end of the long pull wire (22) with the proximal end of the short pull wire (60). The presently preferred pull wire coupling includes a ball and socket coupling (44), and the presently preferred coil coupling includes a bayonet coupling (42). A rigid endoscopic surgical instrument (200) with a detachable end effector assembly (214) is also disclosed. The design of the coupling devices permits the coupling devices to be relatively small, having an overall outer diameter of two to three millimeters.

    • A process for providing an endoscopic scissors blade (26) with the necessary roughness to receive a ceramic coating, without first requiring that the blade surfaces be roughened by grit blasting, includes obtaining an investment mold with an interior textured surface. The investment mold is textured by first texturing an injection mold cavity by etching, grit blasting, or electric-discharge machining the inside surface of the injection mold cavity to produce a desired roughness. A blade pattern (wax) is then formed in the injection mold with a resulting textured surface, and using the textured blade pattern, the investment mold with the textured interior cavity is generated. When metal is injected into the investment mold using a lost wax process, the resulting cast blades will have the necessary roughness for permitting a ceramic to be bonded thereto without the need for any additional roughening. Thus, the so formed blades (26) are coated with a ceramic material (26f). Such scissors blades are used in an endoscopic surgical scissors instrument and are especially useful as the scissor blades of a bipolar cautery endoscopic scissors instrument.

    • A biopsy forceps instrument (100) includes a flexible coil (116) having one or more pull wires (118, 119) extending therethrough, a clevis (34) coupled to the distal end of the coil, a pair of forceps jaws mounted in the clevis (34) coupled to the distal end of the pull wires, and a proximal handle coupled to the proximal ends of the coil and the pull wires (118, 119). The handle includes a slotted shaft (20), and a displaceable spool (22) having a cross member which extends through the slot (28). The shaft (20) is coupled to the coil, and the cross member is coupled to the pull wires. According to the invention at least one constant force spring is provided between the shaft and the spool, and biases the spool in the proximal direction in order to maintain the jaws in a closed position.
