    • An endoscopic multiple sample bioptome includes a hollow outer member and an axially displaceable inner member extending therethrough. The proximal ends of the outer and inner members are coupled to an actuator for axially displacing one relative to the other. The distal end of the outer member is coupled to one of a cylinder having a sharp distal edge and a jaw assembly, while the distal end of the inner member is coupled to the other. The jaw assembly includes a pair of opposed, preferably toothed jaw cups each of which is coupled by a resilient arm to a base member. The arms are bent to lie in planes which intersect the axis of the base member and to locate the jaws apart from each other. The base member is mounted inside the cylinder and axial movement of the jaw assembly and cylinder relative to each other draws the arms into the cylinder and brings the jaw cups together in a biting action. The biting action is enhanced according to the invention by arranging the cutting edge of each jaw to lie in a plane which intersects the plane in which the distal portion of the jaw arm lies. The biting action is further enhanced by providing a closing cam on the outer surface of the jaws which is engaged by the cylinder when the jaws are closed. The arrangement of the cutting edges also presents a smooth surface to the interior of an endoscope and the closing cams prevent the sleeve from sliding completely over and off of the jaws.

    • An apparatus for counting the number of times a temperature cycle occurs includes an indicator having sequential indicia and a temperature responsive member for indicating a next one of the indicia. Mechanical, fluid mechanical and electronic versions of the invention are disclosed. In the mechanical version, the indicator can be a ratchet member having teeth, a pawl and a display surface containing indicia. A temperature responsive element such as a bimetallic member engages the teeth of the ratchet and advances the ratchet each time the apparatus is subjected to a preset temperature cycle. A housing with a window masks the display to indicate one of the indicia as advanced by the temperature responsive element. Preferred embodiments of the mechanical version include a ring-like ratchet member with interior teeth and an exterior display surface. The number of teeth is preferably one or more less than the number of indicia so that upon advancing the ratchet member to the last indicia, it can be advanced no further. The bimetallic element is mounted inside the ring and the housing covers the outer surface of the ring. A removable locking pin is provided to prevent movement of the ratchet member until activated.

    • Surgical instruments of the invention are provided with distal ends having a clevis (20) and two discrete investment cast end effectors (90, 92). One end effector (92) is stationary relative to the clevis, and the other moves or rotates about a transverse pin (45) of the clevis. The rotating end effector (90) includes a first hole through which the transverse pin extends, and the surgical instrument includes an actuation mechanism for causing the rotating end effector to rotate about the transverse pin. The actuation mechanism preferably includes a push rod (60) which is either directly coupled to the proximal end of the rotating end effector or coupled by a link element (97). On the other hand, the stationary second end effector, while including a first hole through which the transverse pin extends, has a boss (46) which preferably engages a hole (46') in the clevis and is not coupled to the actuation mechanism. With the clevis and second end effector being coupled at two locations, the second end effector is not free to rotate about the clevis pin, but is held stationary. Other manners of holding the second end effector stationary are to provide the clevis with a boss, and the stationary end effector with a second hole into which the boss extends, or to provide another pin which extends through one arm of the clevis and the stationary end effector only.
