    • An apparatus for damping bounce-induced oscillations in an internal combustion engine having a fuel metering control for supplying fuel to the engine in accordance with various operational signals, which includes an engine speed sensor for generating an rpm signal proportional to the engine rpm, a signal differentiation circuit for producing an rpm differential signal from the rpm signal, and a phase-shifting circuit, connected to receive the rpm differential signal, for supplying to the fuel metering control a bounce damping signal which is proportional to the rpm differential signal and which is phase-displaced with respect to the rpm differential signal so that the fuel metering control supplies fuel to the engine to countercontrol the bounce-induced oscillations of the engine. In a preferred embodiment, the phase-shifting circuit includes a controllable dead time element for varying the phase displacement in accordance with the bounce frequency so as to compensate for the total system transit time of the apparatus, to thus effect countercontrolling of the bounce oscillations which is correctly phased and correct in frequency.

    • There is described a method and apparatus for use in association with the fuel injection pumps of Diesel engines to time the moment of injection. The method and apparatus described relate to a closed-loop control system which engages a final control element in the fuel injection pump that changes the injection timing, i.e. the onset of fuel delivery and, hence, the onset of fuel injection. The controlled variable is the moment of fuel injection, detected by suitable means placed near the injection valves. A set-point value for this instant is derived on the basis of stored data which correlate the correct moment of injection as a function of engine speed with various optimum conditions, for example, low fuel consumption, low smoke generation, low noise, etc. The selection of the proper characteristic curve from the stored data set is made automatically or manually. The time of occurrence of the actual value pulse and the time of the set-point pulse are compared, for example, by converting the former to analog form, and the resulting control deviation is obtained as a preferably digital counter content which is used to engage the final control element to reduce the deviation.

    • A fuel supply apparatus is proposed which serves to control a mixture-compressing, externally ignited internal combustion engine. The fuel supply apparatus includes at least one fuel depositing point in the air intake manifold, within which an air flow rate meter and an arbitrarily actuatable throttle valve are disposed in series and the air flow rate meter is moved against a restoring force in accordance with the air quantity flowing therethrough. The air flow rate meter, which is embodied as a flat rotary element in the shape of a circular sector, more or less widely opens an aperture which defines the cross-sectional width of the air intake manifold and is rotatably fixed about a rigid shaft extending in the direction of air flow. The intake manifold pressure upstream of the air flow rate meter acts on one side of the air flow rate meter, and the intake manifold pressure downstream of the air flow rate meter acts on the other side of the air flow rate meter. In a plane downstream of the air flow rate meter which is parallel to the aperture, there is an arbitrarily actuatable lobed element, by means of which the flow-through cross-sectional area at the aperture can be varied in accordance with the operating characteristics of the internal combustion engine.

    • A fuel metering control loop which includes an exhaust gas sensor and an integrating controller. In order to operate the system at an air number which may differ from the most stable operating point of the oxygen sensor, the output signal from the controller is deliberately changed so as to override the command signals from the oxygen sensor. In particular, the output signal undergoes a step-change toward a higher or lower value at the times of reversal of sensor potential. Thus, the average value of the air number which the controller effectively maintains is different from the nominal value which would be obtained with direct sensor control. In another embodiment, the ongoing integration process is continued for some time beyond the sensor signal reversal.

    • A continuous fuel injection system for metering out fuel to the induction tube of an internal combustion engine. An air flow metering assembly in the induction tube includes a baffle plate which is set with its plane perpendicular to the air flow vector and is mounted on a shaft which slides axially in bearings. As a result of the air flow, the baffle plate is displaced axially to varying extent and this displacement is opposed by a restoring force provided by pressurized fuel and subject to adjustment on the basis of engine variables. A vaned impeller wheel, mounted on the baffle shaft, causes rotation of the shaft in the bearings, thereby eliminating static friction and preventing hysteresis effects. The centrifugal forces generated by the rotation aid in distributing the fuel and in admixing it with the incoming air.
