    • Speech characteristics are obtained using a minimum of parameters, which correspond to auditory perception characteristics, without carrying out spectral analysis, by determining an ACF (autocorrelation function) of a speech signal collected by a microphone, and deriving from the ACF a value Φ (0) of when a delay time of the ACF is 0, a delay time τ1 and an amplitude φ1 of a first peak of the ACF, and an effective duration time τe of the ACF. Furthermore, it is possible to achieve highly accurate recognition that reflects human perception in actual sound fields by determining an interaural crosscorrelation function (IACF) of the speech signal, and extracting from the IACF a maximum value IACC of the IACF, a delay time τIACC of a peak of the IACF, and a width WIACC of the maximum amplitude of the IACF, and including these IACF factors, that is, spatial information of the sound field.

    • The invention relates to a method of preparing a sulfonimide, a first salt thereof, or a second salt thereof. The method includes the step of: (a) reacting one or two sulfonyl fluorides with nonhydrous ammonia and an amine component which is one of a tertiary amine and a heterocyclic amine, so as to prepare the first salt. Alternatively, the method includes the step of: (a) reacting the sulfonyl fluoride with the amine component and a sulfonamide, so as to prepare the first salt. The method further optionally includes, after the step (a), the step of: (b) reacting, in an aqueous solution, the first salt with a metal compound, so as to prepare the second salt. The method still further optionally includes, after the step (a), the step of: (c) reacting the first salt with a strong acid so as to prepare the sulfonimide. Alternatively, the method further optionally includes, after the step (b), the step of: (d) reacting the second salt with a strong acid so as to prepare the sulfonimide. The sulfonimide, the first salt or the second salt is easily economically prepared in an industrial scale production with high purity and high yield.

    • An arch guide for a strapping machine comprises corner sections interconnected by linear sections. Each of those sections includes inner and outer peripheral portions disposed, respectively, closer to and farther from a center of the guide. The inner and outer portions form a guide passage for the band, the passage being open at a side facing a guide plate. The open side of the arch guide is yieldably urged against the guide plate to close the open side. The inner portion extends toward the guide plate at an inwardly directed inclination to facilitate movement of the arch guide away from the guide plate when the band is being withdrawn from the passage. A guide extends from the leading end of a linear section into a trailing end of a corner section for directing an advancing band toward the outer portion of the corner section. The outer portion of at least the linear sections are yieldable in a direction away from the inner portion in a manner increasing the height of the height of the open side of the band passage. The guide plate carries an elastic material covered by a sheet of anti-wear, anti-friction material against which the open side of the arch guide is biased.
