Centrifugal governors.-In a combined centrifugal and inertia governor, the weights are pivoted on bell-cranks F, which are carried by a bracket mounted free to rotate on the driving- shaft A, but prevented from endlong movement by a ball bearing on its under surface and a collar T above it. The bell-cranks are connected to the muff B, and transmit the governing movement of the weights. These have the major part of their mass arranged at their adjacent sides and at the circumference. A spring X in tension connects the weights, being housed in recesses therein. To drive the weights, arms S connect sliding blocks R on the weights with the collar T fast on the shaft. To limit their outward movement, each weight is provided with a hooked projection P entering a recess Q in the other weight.

Pens.-A reservoir attachment to be fitted to pen nibs consists of a vessel A of rubber, aluminium, celluloid, &c. having openings at the ends through which the nib is passed. The upper end of the reservoir clips the nib by means of tongues D , D' which have a broad bearing on the nib to prevent rocking and are slightly turned out at the ends. The lower end of the reservoir has an opening C which encircles the pen point so that the reservoir does not touch the point and interfere with its flexibility. The width of the opening is reduced at the middle by means of lips C , C'. The reservoir is filled by dipping the pen into an ink well.

For use in making a paving-composition, the tar or pitch may contain as much as 50 per cent. of lampblack. Free lampblack may be added to the tar or pitch, a tar or pitch containing an excess of lampblack may be added to one containing a deficiency thereof, or the process of manufacture of the tar or pitch may be varied to obtain the desired proportion of lampblack therein.

摘要： 24,305. Rice, R. H., and Sargent, J. W. Dec. 6. Valve gear.-Relates to means for closing the steam valve immediately upon its liberation as in Corliss valve gear. Fig. 2 shows the device in section. Upon horns 19 and 21 projecting from the valve bonnet 11 are mounted a pair of cylinders. The closure of the valve is effected by steam acting in the lower cylinder 18 on a plunger 22 suitably connected with an arm 13 on the valve spindle 12. The upper cylinder 20 is an air cushioning device, the piston 24 in which has openings covered by leather flaps so as to admit air freely but to prevent its escape. The outlet of air is regulated by a screw 32. The pipe conveying steam to the cylinder 18 is formed with a bend or trap in which water of condensation collects so as to prevent leakage of steam.

Class 86 A mixer comprises a trough 1 having parallel sides and arcuate ends, a spindle 11 carried by a support 14 capable of horizontal reciprocation on rods 16, a driving crank 8 and a connecting rod 17 between the crank pin 8a and spindle 11 for imparting horizontal reciprocation to the spindle. Pinions 18 and 19 are secured respectively to the crank pin 8a and spindle 11, and a chain drive 20 between the pinions 18 and 19 imparts rotation to the spindle 11 from the rotation of the crank 8 with a step up ratio of one to three. Blades 9a are supported from the spindle at a radial distance from the centre of rotation which is slightly less than the radius of curvature of the arcuate ends of the trough so that they sweep close to the side and end walls during their movement. The blades 9a do not extend to the top of the trough so that when the trough is filled the bottom material is swept forward resulting in a turning over of the material. The spindles may be swept forwardly to assist this action.
