    • Apparatus for centrifugally moulding and lining concrete pipes, is of the type comprising a supporting framework having means for locating a vertical mould in axial alignment with a vertically reciprocating and rotating piston or packer having packing elements, and means for moving the piston up and down so that it traverses the mould from the bottom to the top, the piston and its associated parts being counterbalanced. In the apparatus of the invention, Fig. 2, the piston is mounted on the upper end of shaft 12 which is carried within an outer sleeve 12a, the shaft being rotated by the motor 13 through a belt drive 17. The supporting structure 16 has rollers 18 which run on vertical parts of the frame. The piston assembly is vertically lifted by a reversible electric motor 19 driving through automatic change speed and reverse gearing a cross-shaft 20 counterbalanced by weights 23, (see Group XXIV). With this arrangement overdrive is prevented. The mould support consists of a floor plate 43, and an upper supporting tray 45 with a mould retaining ring on its underside. The tray is guided at each side and may be raised or lowered by means of a lever 51, rods 50 and counter-balanced bars 59. The tray has a plate 47 arranged to receive a cylindrical pipe socket former which may be rotated by an electric motor 77. The table may be freed by movement of a lever 54 which causes the adjustable stops 53 to swing rearwardly, thereby enabling the table to rise and so allow the insertion or removal of the mould. The piston wall, Figs. 4, 5, is preferably built up from wear resisting metal strip 62, and packing elements 63 are mounted on the piston crown, each element consisting of a blade pivoted on a spindle 64. The blades are coupled together through a toggle mechanism 67, 68, to a vertical actuating rod 65 which passes through the centre of the piston and its driving shaft and is freely movable with respect thereto so that the rod may be lowered or raised by a lever 71, Fig. 1, (not shown), to open or retract the blades, the end of the lever being arranged to engage adjustable stops 73, 74, during the process. In operation the body of the pipe is first moulded and then the lining material which may consist of sand and cement with or without fillers such as powdered glass, carbon &c. is fed on to the piston crown. The motor 19 then raises the piston with the blades open or projecting so that the material is wiped into the soft surface of the pipe body, at the same time further compressing the body. The socket of the pipe however is not lined. When the head of the piston is clear of the former the blades are retracted by the engagement of the lever 71 with the stop 74, the motor 19 is automatically reversed and the piston returned at a faster speed to smooth the lining. A pipe-casting mould in two semi-circular parts having flanges by which they are bolted together and belled or flared at one end to form a socket end of the pipe has a rim or flange at each end to which is fixed a master ring which is rotated and which carries pipe end shaping members. The mould is belled or flared at one end, as shown at the lift in Fig. 3, and circumferential L-sectioned rims 8, 9 are riveted on the outside of the mould on the two ends and the master rings 10, 11 are bolted to them, their outer circumferential surfaces being shaped to engage driving members (not shown) to rotate the mould. Two pairs of inset members are shown, one, 12, 13, being used to adapt the mould for the formation of a self-inverting pipe and the other 14b, 15, being for a flexible joint pipe. The inset 12 forms, between its outside face and the flared inside end of the mould, a pipe socket of stepped form, and the inset 13 forms a stepped spigot to fit into a socket of the shape mentioned. The inset 15 for forming the spigot end of a flexible joint pipe adapted to a socket end as formed by the inset 14b is a thin ring adapted to spring in between the mould end and the inside of the flange on'the end of the master ring 11. The ring insets can be changed without changing the master rings, whereby pipes with ends of varying forms can be moulded in the same mould.

Class 86 A mixer comprises a trough 1 having parallel sides and arcuate ends, a spindle 11 carried by a support 14 capable of horizontal reciprocation on rods 16, a driving crank 8 and a connecting rod 17 between the crank pin 8a and spindle 11 for imparting horizontal reciprocation to the spindle. Pinions 18 and 19 are secured respectively to the crank pin 8a and spindle 11, and a chain drive 20 between the pinions 18 and 19 imparts rotation to the spindle 11 from the rotation of the crank 8 with a step up ratio of one to three. Blades 9a are supported from the spindle at a radial distance from the centre of rotation which is slightly less than the radius of curvature of the arcuate ends of the trough so that they sweep close to the side and end walls during their movement. The blades 9a do not extend to the top of the trough so that when the trough is filled the bottom material is swept forward resulting in a turning over of the material. The spindles may be swept forwardly to assist this action.

Class 87(ii) The subject-matter of this Specification is substantially the same as that described in Specification 661,289 by the same applicant, in so far that Figs. 1-4 of this Specification are included within the drawing of Specification 661,289. In the present Specification table 45 and the socket former 89, Fig. 6, are modified, and vertically upstanding bars 86a, Figs. 3, mounted on the piston crown are adapted to form the concrete material into a substantially cylindrical wall and feed this wall, as the piston rotates and moves upwardly, into the space defined between the upper end of the mould 93 and the outer surface of the former. The mould is mounted so that its upper end projects above the vertically adjustable tray 45. The socket former 89 has a flange 90 for securing to the plate 47, the inner diameter of the former 89 being such that the piston with the packing blades 63 in the open position can pass therethrough. The underside of the flange 90 has wedge like packers 95, and holes or slits may be provided through the flange to allow the escape of excess concrete. The former 89 produces a stepped, preferably tapering, socket end, and small steps or grooves may also be provided to allow for packing material. The male end of the pipe at the bottom of the mould may be complementary to the socket. A detachable annulus 92 secured to the tray 45 receives the upper end of mould 93 and bears on a right angle section 94 on the outside of the mould. In operation, the apparatus is set up as in the prior Specification, the piston lifted vertically and at the same time rotated. Concrete material is fed on to the piston crown and is built up into an advancing wall to enter the socket space. the table 45 being rotated in a direction contrary to the direction of rotation of the piston so that the packers 95 in combination with the piston consolidate the concrete in the space. The table is then stopped, the blades 63 retracted, and the still rotating piston returned to the bottom of the mould to smooth the pipe bore.
