摘要： 24,305. Rice, R. H., and Sargent, J. W. Dec. 6. Valve gear.-Relates to means for closing the steam valve immediately upon its liberation as in Corliss valve gear. Fig. 2 shows the device in section. Upon horns 19 and 21 projecting from the valve bonnet 11 are mounted a pair of cylinders. The closure of the valve is effected by steam acting in the lower cylinder 18 on a plunger 22 suitably connected with an arm 13 on the valve spindle 12. The upper cylinder 20 is an air cushioning device, the piston 24 in which has openings covered by leather flaps so as to admit air freely but to prevent its escape. The outlet of air is regulated by a screw 32. The pipe conveying steam to the cylinder 18 is formed with a bend or trap in which water of condensation collects so as to prevent leakage of steam.

The vertical shaft of the turbine runs in a bearing supplied with lubricating-fluid under pressure, and a branch pipe 41 from the lubricant-supply pipe admits the fluid under a piston 75 so that the piston is supported and keeps a weighted lever 32 in a raised position. If the pressure of lubricant falls below the required minimum, the weighted lever drops and moves the regulating-valve of the piston 60, which slides the cam 46 so that the nozzle valves are closed and the turbine stops.

Fluid bearings; lubricating.-A thrust or step fluid-pressure bearing is provided with an auxiliary bearing-block to take the weight if the pressure of fluid at the main bearing fails. The application to the step bearing of a vertical turbine shaft is described. The block 20, secured to the shaft 7, has a chamber 21 registering with a similar chamber in the lower block 23, which fits as a piston in a chamber in the base 22 and is prevented from turning by one or more pins 36. Fluid, preferably lubricant, is supplied by the pipe 25 to the chamber 24, and passes by the passage 27 to the chamber 21 at sufficiently high pressure to support the load. The block 23 tends to rise under the fluid pressure, and is held by the enlarged head of the spindle 28, the height of which is adjusted by the worm-wheel 29, worm 30, and a hand-wheel. The auxiliary bearing-block 32, which takes the load when the block 23 falls through lack of pressure, has a groove to which lubricant or other fluid is supplied by the pipe 33, and is supported by pins 34 seated on the platen 35, mounted on the threaded sleeve 31 on the base 22. The height of the auxiliary block 32 is adjusted by the worm-wheel 37 and a handwheel. Lubricant escaping from between the bearing-blocks finds its way to the chamber 40, flows upwards through grooves in the guide-bearing, and is discharged by passages 17 into the chamber 18 formed in the casing 8, from which it is collected by the pipes 19. Carbon packing-rings 11, 12 are placed in chambers in the cover 10. Under normal conditions, steam or other fluid under pressure is supplied by the pipe 13 to the chamber containing the packing-ring 12.
