    • A background suppression device comprising emitting means (13) emitting a light beam (14) emitted in a set direction and optoelectronic. receiving means of a light beam (16) reflected by an object (18) providing a first (21) and a second (22) signal. The device further comprises processing means which, in the detecting condition of the device (1), receives the first (21a) and second (22a) signal and provides an output information signal, in function of the first (21a) and said second (22a) signal, indicating the presence or the absence of the object (18) within an interval of set distances. The processing means stores, in a calibrating condition of the device (1), the first (21b) and second (22b) signal and provides the output information signal in function of the first (21a) and/or of the second (22a) signal in the detecting condition and of the first (21b) and/or second (22b) signal in the calibrating condition. In the calibrating condition the object is absent and accordingly the first (21b) and second (22b) signal in the calibrating condition store the background (20).

    • Structures and methods for three-dimensional image sensing using high frequency modulation includes CMOS-implementable sensor structures using differential charge transfer, including such sensors enabling rapid horizontal and slower vertical dimension local charge collection. Wavelength response of such sensors can be altered dynamically by varying gate potentials. Methods for producing such sensor structures on conventional CMOS fabrication facilities include use of "rich" instructions to command the fabrication process to optimize image sensor rather than digital or analog ICs. One detector structure has closely spaced-apart, elongated finger-like structures that rapidly collect charge in the spaced-apart direction and then move collected charge less rapidly in the elongated direction. Detector response is substantially independent of the collection rate in the elongated direction.

    • A chirped backscatter filter (10) compares a received signal (RSIG) to a reference signal related to a transmitted signal (TSIG) and removes from RSIG the frequency component which is equal to TSIG in frequency. This removed frequency component corresponds to the frequency of the transmitter backscatter radiation. The filter of the invention adds a frequency offset (fn) to both RSIG and TSIG in mixers (12 and 14) before subtracting one from the other in mixer (22). Thus, equal frequency components in both RSIG and TSIG, such as the backscatter radiation frequency component of RSIG, will equal fn. The frequencies resulting from this subtraction are thereafter passed through a notch filter (24) which is centered on fn and which passes all frequency components except fn. The output of the notch filter thus no longer has a frequency component associated with the backscatter frequency component. The loss of the RSIG phase reference due to the phase reference between the RSIG and TSIG modulation envelopes being destroyed during the backscatter filtering process is thereafter compensated for by adding TSIG to the filtered difference frequency component, thereby reestablishing the phase relationship of the original RSIG frequency components minus the backscatter frequency component.
