    • A tension adjusting device for an engine accessory driving belt is provided which can maintain high sealability in the bearing portion about which a pulley arm supporting a tension pulley pivots for a long period of time.By tightening a bolt 7 threaded into an engine block 8, a fulcrum shaft 6 is fixed. A tension pulley is rotatably supported by a pulley arm 2 pivotally supported about the fulcrum shaft 6. A regulating force of a hydraulic auto-tensioner is applied to the pulley arm 2 to press the tension pulley against the belt B. A washer 10 is disposed between a boss 3 formed on the pulley arm 2 and the head 7a of the bolt 7. The washer 10 has an outer cylindrical portion 11 covering one end of the boss 3. A slinger 12 is mounted on the end of the boss 3 to define a labyrinth 13 between the slinger 12 and the cylindrical portion 11, thereby preventing entry of muddy water and dust into the bearing portion pivotally supporting the pulley arm 2.

    • A hydraulic automatic tensioner for adjusting the tension of an endless belt in a power transmitting mechanism for transmitting power to engine accessories of an internal combustion engine through the belt comprises: a fixed first member (11), a piston (PS) formed integrally with the first member (11), a movable second member (12) coaxially combined with the first member (11) so as to be axially movable relative to the first member (11), a cylinder (CY) formed integrally with the second member (12), defining a fluid-reservoir chamber (R) for storing a hydraulic fluid together with the first member (11), and provided with a leak passage (20), axially slidably receiving the piston (PS), a spring (S) pushing the first and the second member (11, 12) away from each other. The piston (PS) and the cylinder (CY) form a pressure chamber (P) filled with the hydraulic fluid. The second member (12) is provided with a leak passage ((20) through which the hydraulic fluid flows from the pressure chamber (P) into the fluid-reservoir chamber (R). A control valve (V) is placed in the leak passage (20) and inhibits the flow of the hydraulic fluid from the pressure chamber (P) through the leak passage (20) into the fluid-reservoir chamber (R). A control device (13) makes the function of the control valve (V) effective to close the leak passage (20) when activated and makes the function of the control valve (V) ineffective when deactivated so that the pressure chamber (P) is able to communicate with the fluid-reservoir chamber (R) by means of the leak passage (20). The tensioner is capable of properly coping with the sudden change of the tension of the belt to ensure that power is always surely transmitted.

    • An automatic tensioner to be used with a drive train of a self-propelled mower for drivingly connecting a ground wheel to the mower transmission, wherein the tensioner includes tensioning mechanism, which may be constructed as a spring biased idler arm having an idler member rotatably mounted thereon, to apply a tensioning force against the flexible element of the drive. The tensioner further includes an anti-slackening assembly having an elongated takeup rod being pivotally coupled with the idler arm at one end thereof so that the takeup rod moves generally with the idler arm, as the arm moves in a tensioning direction and opposed slackening direction. The anti-slackening assembly also includes a swingable control tab having an aperture receiving the other end of the takeup rod. The tensioner is constructed so that the takeup rod engages the aperture of the control tab to swing the control tab to a disposition in which the takeup rod is generally aligned with the aperture permitting relative movement therebetween as the idler arm and takeup rod move in the tensioning direction, and to alternatively swing the control tab to a locking position in which the takeup rod is canted within the aperture to prevent the idler arm and takeup rod from moving in the slackening direction.

    • An oil-operated tensioner is constructed with an internal cylinder which receives a rod in such a way that the rod itself serves as a piston, and the diameter of the high pressure chamber formed by the rod and the cylinder is the same as that of the rod. This configuration eliminates changes in the volume of the low pressure oil chamber of the tensioner, maintains substantially constant oil pressure in the low pressure chamber, and substantially reduces the tendency of air to be drawn into the low pressure chamber as a result of flow of oil out of the low pressure chamber when the rod moves in the protruding direction. A piston on the rod in the low pressure chamber, but spaced from the wall of the chamber by a gap, exerts a positive pressure on the oil as the rod moves in the protruding direction to provide further assurance against the entry of air. A valve incorporated into the piston closes as the rod advances and opens when the rod retracts, thereby preventing the piston from causing a negative oil pressure and drawing air past the seal into the low pressure oil chamber.
