    • A tool for fitting a belt into the groove of a pulley. The tool comprises a base plate having a first and a second face. The plate is flat or forms a part of a cylinder and the first face is concave. The tool also comprises first and second holding members that are substantially flat and parallel with each other. The holding members are spaced apart and extend from the first face of the base plate. If the base plate is flat, the holding members are perpendicular to the base plate. If the base plate is not flat, the holding members are perpendicular to the axis of the cylinder at least partially formed by the base plate. The tool also comprises a guide member extending from a second face of the plate opposite to the first face.

    • It is desired to improve the wear resistance of the valve seat of the check valve in a hydraulic tensioner. The hydraulic tensioner includes a cylinder having a hollow space filled with hydraulic oil. A plunger is slidably mounted in the cylinder. A pushrod is mounted in the hollow space so as to be axially movable together with the plunger with one end thereof protruding from the cylinder. A spring is mounted in the cylinder to bias the plunger and pushrod outwardly of the cylinder. The plunger is formed with a passage through which the pressure chamber and the reservoir chamber communicate with each other. The passage is formed with a valve seat. A check ball is arranged so as to be moved into and out of contact with the valve seat. The check ball is adapted to contact the valve seat when the pressure in the pressure chamber exceeds the pressure in the reservoir chamber, thereby closing the passage. The valve seat is formed of a steel for carburizing and has a surface carbon concentration of 0.55-0.75% to reduce deposition of carbides and to have a surface hardness at least equal to the check ball. This improves wear resistance of the valve seat and thus extends the life of the hydraulic tensioner.

    • A belt installation tool having a substantially planar body having a circumferential surface and a roller. The roller radially projects from the body. An axis of rotation of the roller is disposed cooperatively with a belt urging member. The belt urging member projects from an outer flange. The roller urges a belt slightly radially outward from a pulley center. The belt urging member then urges the belt laterally to install the belt in a pulley groove. A second roller projecting radially from the body and having an axis of rotation parallel to the body is used to remove a belt from a pulley.

    • In a chain tensioner having a plunger biased to protrude from a housing by a spring, a pair of wedge-shaped cams are received in tapered recesses in the end of the housing, cooperate with racks formed on opposite sides of the plunger, and are urged against oblique seats formed by the tapered recesses by a biasing spring. The cams and racks produce a ratcheting action maintaining chain tension by preventing retracting movement of the plunger. The cams and racks disperse the load imparted to the plunger by the chain, and reduce localized wear, allowing the housing to be made from a light weight material such as aluminum. Accuracy requirements associated with conventional pawl-type ratcheting tensioners are avoided.
