    • A flexible insulation material and method for using such an insulation material with an HVAC duct to provide noise suppression and thermal protection. The insulation material includes a lofted substrate and a facer sheet laminated thereto. The substrate contains nonwoven lofted fibers and the insulation material is attached to the duct such that a first surface of the substrate faces a wall surface of the duct and the facer sheet is on the opposite surface of the substrate. The facer sheet includes a polymeric film bonded to the substrate, a metallization layer on the polymeric film, and optionally a protective coating on the metallization layer. The insulation material can be used as an external duct wrap or an internal duct liner. In the former application, the insulation material preferably includes a second facer sheet on the first surface of the substrate.

    • An impermeable rubber hose is thinned for the purpose of reducing weight and costs. A rigid resin film is used as an intermediate layer. When the resin film is gradually rolled up into a cylindrical shape from a planar shape and fed to an extrusion head and rubber is simultaneously extrusion-molded inside and outside the cylindrical film, the film produces a break or a twist to make extrusion molding difficult. It is an object of the present invention to make simultaneous extrusion molding possible even in such a condition. To attain the above object, a thermoplastic resin film (5) which forms an intermediate layer (2) and of which the melting point is lower than the vulcanizing temperature is formed in a long belt-shape. Slits (7) are provided at fixed intervals on the right and left long side sections (8, 8) of the film (5) in the longitudinal direction. When the resin film (5) is fed into an extrusion head (10) to be rolled up into a cylindrical shape, because both the long side sections (8, 8) of the film (5) are formed as weak sections by the slits (7), the film (5) adsorbs a strain when bent and is bent in a circle, thereby allowing the right and left long side sections (8, 8) to overlap at an overlapping section (6). In this condition, rubber is simultaneously extrusion-molded inside and outside the film and then, vulcanized to weld the overlapping section (6), thereby eliminating the slits (7).

    • The design and construction of past exhaust port liners with heat insulation capabilities have had to become more simple in order to reduce costs. However, less costly exhaust port liners may have inferior heat insulation capabilities. The present invention overcomes this and other problems with a means for encapsulating an insulating layer of material. The encapsulating means is composed of fiberglass cloth with the ability to withstand high temperatures. A blanket is formed when the fiberglass cloth encapsulates the insulating layer. The blanket is stitched in a quilted pattern to form a plurality of individual pockets. The blanket is wrapped around a ceramic body of a port liner. The quilted stitching pattern, due to separating the insulating layer into the plurality of individual pockets, protects the pockets individually. If damage should occur to one of the plurality of pockets, the insulating layer would remain intact within the remaining plurality of pockets. Therefore, the surrounding pockets retain their individual insulating layer increasing the durability of the blanket and prolonging the life of the insulating layer. The ability to protect the insulating layer from catastrophic damage increases efficiency and decreases the rate of heat loss. The ability to decrease the rate of heat loss increases engine efficiency.
