    • A multi-stage gear shift transmission (T) comprising a plurality of forward stage gear trains (G1-G5) capable of being alternatively established, and a reverse stage gear train (GR) having an idle gear portion (18) meshed with a reverse input gear (16) and a reverse output gear (17). The forward stage and reverse stage gear trains are provided between an input shaft (2) and an output shaft (3) parallel to the input shaft. A reverse stage establishing clutch mechanism (19) is interposed in the middle of the reverse stage gear train (GR). The idle gear portion (18) is divided into a first idle gear (18₁) meshed with the reverse input gear (16), and a second idle gear (18₂) meshed with the reverse output gear (17) and capable of being connected to the first idle gear through the reverse stage establishing clutch mechanism (19). The reverse stage establishing clutch mechanism comprises a sleeve (45) which is engaged with the first idle gear (18₁) for relative non-rotation and for axial relative movement and which is capable of being meshed with the second idle gear (18₂), a braking member (46) which is disposed between the fist and second idle gears for axial movement so that it may be urged toward the second idle gear (18₂) in response to the movement of the sleeve (45) toward the second idle gear and which is capable of being rotated in unison with the first idle gear (18₁), and a stationary part (31) fixedly disposed to temporarily frictionally engage with the braking member (46) when the braking member is moved toward the second idle gear (18₂).

    • In a tractor power take-off mechanism comprising an input shaft driveable from an engine by a friction clutch and a two-speed power take-off shaft driveable from the input shaft by gearing including a disengageable toothed driving member operable by a hand lever by way of a selector fork, the disengageable toothed driving member can be difficult and noisy to engage because the input shaft tends to rotate due to inertia and drag when the friction clutch is disengaged. The input shaft is therefore provided with a band brake applied by initial movement of the hand lever in a direction to engage the disengageable toothed driving member and held applied while an operating load is being exerted on the lever in that direction. A conventional detent holding the selector fork in disengaged position provides the resistance required to cause the brake to be applied before the lever can move the fork into engaged position.
