    • A hydraulic braking system is provided in which the speed of increase of the hydraulic pressure to the wheel cylinders is controlled so that appropriate braking force is ensured while at the same type preventing the road wheels from being positioned in a lock-up condition. In order to provide for such an operation, the locking condition of the road wheels may be detected during braking operation and the anti-lock control system operated so that changeover valves are positioned by a control system so that output pressure of a hydraulic booster is applied to the anti-lock control valves and to the flow control valves so as to appropriately changeover between one of two operating positions in response to the locking condition of the road wheel. In order to provide for such fluid communication of the braking system, a multi-stage orifice arrangement is provided in connection with the anti-lock control valves and the flow control valves.

A switching solenoid valve which opens or closes the connection between the first fluid path and the output port is assembled on the lower end face of the intermediate member. The solenoid valve has an orifice of a reduced diameter which maintains a communication between the first fluid path and the output port.

The flow restrictor may be a groove formed in an end face of a valving member opposite to the valve seat, a rough or ragged surface of the valve seat or valving member, or a porous structure formed on the valving member so as to contact the valve seat. Alternatively, the flow restrictor may be formed by a porous structure which fills a hole formed in parallel with the valve hole which is open in the valve seat.

    • A vacuum-actuated adaptive braking modulator provides a nonlinear brake pressure build curve without requiring a multiplicity of solenoid valves. The device includes the usual diaphragm slidably mounted within a housing and which defines a pair of compartments between opposite sides of the diaphragm and corresponding ends of the housing, and a slow pressure bleed orifice extending through the diaphragm that permits restricted fluid communication from one compartment to the other during a brake pressure build operation. The diaphragm includes a flexible resilient portion which interconnects the rigid portion of the diaphragm to the wall of the housing. A plurality of passages in addition to the slow bleed orifice extend through the rigid portion of the diaphragm to communicate one of the chambers with the other. When the diaphragm is disposed in an extreme actuated position, the flexible portion of the diaphragm is moved away from the passages to permit fluid communication through the latter between the chambers. However, as the diaphragm moves in the return direction, the diaphragm progressively closes the passages, thereby reducing the size of the total area of the passages communicating the chambers with one another, and thereby reducing the rate at which the diaphragm moves. Since the brake pressure build rate is governed by the rate of movement of diaphragm, the brake pressure build rate will be relatively large when the diaphragm is disposed in the extreme actuated position, and will be progressively reduced as the diaphragm moves in the return direction.
