    • Disclosed is a connector system for medical applications such as intravenously introducing medication into a patient. In intravenous applications a feeding system is employed through which parenteral liquid flows into the patient intravenously via a needle attached at one end to the feeding system and having its pointed end inserted into the patient's vein. The feeding system includes a port at the end of a conduit which has a seal associated with it which closes said port but is adapted to be penetrated by a second needle. This second needle is connected to a source of medication which flows through the second needle and mixes with the parenteral liquid flowing into the patient. A cap member is secured to the port and it carries within a cavity the second needle which penetrates the seal when the cap member is covering the port. Because the cap is secured to the port, movement of the patient will not result in the second needle being pulled from the seal. The needle is lodged deep within the cavity so that if the cap is placed, for example, on the patient's bed, the needle will not directly contact bacteria which may be on the bed. To avoid scraping material from the internal conduit walls with the needle, a potentially lethal event, the cap member serves as a guide which directs the needle into the center of the seal, well away from the internal conduit walls.

    • An expanding needle is provided that includes a tubular body having a proximal end, a needle-tipped distal end, and a lumen extending therebetween. The expanding needle also includes a longitudinal seam formed on the tubular body. The tubular body is configured to uncurl radially, along the longitudinal seam, thereby transitioning the tubular body from a contracted state to an expanded state to increase an inner diameter of the lumen. In certain embodiments, the tubular body is formed by, for example, a continuous flexible sheet rolled in a lengthwise direction. In that case, the longitudinal seam is defined by a portion of a side of the flexible sheet overlapping an opposing side of the flexible sheet. An expanding needle device, including an expanding needle seated to a needle hub, and a method of increasing an inner diameter of an expanding needle are also provided herein.

    • Disclosed are applicators and methods injecting of a liquid anesthetic into a dental patient with no or minimal pain. In accordance with one embodiment the applicator is for intraligamentary injection and includes an elongated, thin member having an open distal free formed of a resilient and somewhat conformable material suitable for producing a substantially fluid-tight interface with the anatomic structures at the gingival sulcus to inject the anesthetic therein. In another embodiment the applicator includes a flexible skirt surrounding a sharpened cannula, with the cannula being movable with respect to the skirt. The skirt is arranged to receive the anesthetic to anesthetize the gum, whereupon the cannula can then pierce the gum to inject the anesthetic into the underlying anatomic structure.
