    • An injection molded anti-scatter grid is fabricated from an engineered thermoplastic to form a focused x-ray absorbent framework defining a plurality of inter-spaces. The engineered thermoplastic has higher yield strength than conventional anti-scatter grid fabrication materials, which produces a structurally rigid grid that renders conventional fiber-like inter-space material unnecessary, and further allows the grid to be flexed in one or more directions to change an effective focal length of the grid. The engineered thermoplastic is loaded with high density particles in order to be x-ray absorbent, while still maintaining desired structural properties.

    • A monitor device for monitoring the activity of an individual to provide an alarm for anomalous by the individual. The device includes a triaxial accelerometer adapted to measure simultaneously measure acceleration in three orthogonal, linear axes and generate a voltage output identifying the amplitude and frequency of detected motion by the individual in each axis. Also included is interface electronics for receiving the voltage outputs and buffering the voltage outputs to generate a first reference voltage for each axis of the accelerometer. Amplifier electronics amplifies each voltage output and compares each voltage output to the first reference voltage to produce a digital signal. A microcontroller receives the digital signal to compare it to an adjustable second reference voltage. The microcontroller is programmed to discriminate between normal activity and anomalous activity by identifying sensor activity within sequences of preselected time intervals and sending an alarm signal upon detection of the anomalous activity. An alarm for receiving the alarm signal and signaling an alarm completes the device.

    • For error recovery purposes, a backup copy of only a portion of the cache directory is maintained in non-volatile storage. Because only a portion of the cache directory is backup copied, a savings in storage space is realized. The partial copy includes an indication of the storage locations on a storage device for which data is in the cache, and an indication of the state of the data, i.e., whether the data is in process of being read from the cache by the processor, is in process of being written to the cache by the processor, is in the process of being destaged from the cache to the storage device, or none of the above. Only certain changes to the state of the cache cause a backup copy of a portion of the cache directory to be saved; other changes to the state of the cache do not cause the portion of the cache directory to be saved in non-volatile storage. This saves processing time by limiting the number of times that data is copied to the cache.

    • An optimization method or apparatus adapted for use on a compiler for generating machine code optimized for a pipeline processor. A compute-compare-branch sequence in a loop is replaced with a compare-compute-branch sequence. A compute-compare-branch sequence is a sequence of instructions to compute the value of one or more variables, execute a comparison involving the variables, and execute a conditional branch conditioned on the comparison. In the compare-compute-branch sequence, the instructions of the compute-compare-branch sequence are reordered as follows. First, the comparison is executed. In the compare-compute-branch sequence, the comparison involves previously set values of the variables. Second, the computation is executed to compute the current values of the variables. Finally, the conditional branch conditioned on the latter comparison is executed so as to have the effect of executing during the previous execution of the sequence. One or more temporary variables store the previous values of the variables. They are set to the values of the variables at the end of the compare-compute-branch sequence. Before execution of the loop, the temporary variables are set so that the condition will not be met the first time the sequence executes. After execution of the loop, a comparison and a conditional branch are executed. The comparison involves the temporary variables, and the conditional branch is conditioned on the comparison.
