    • The invention relates to a display device (6;6') comprising a display (2) having a plurality of display pixels (3;3') with light emitting elements (LED) and at least a first drive element (T1) and a second drive element (T2) for driving said light emitting elements (LED) in accordance with an analogue data signal, representing at least one frame in a range from low to high overall light emission states for said display (2). The display device (6;6') further comprises a display controller (10) having a data input (9) for the analogue data signal, a sensing unit (16) adapted to evaluate the overall light emission state of said frame and an output (13) for generating at least one sparkling signal for the one or more display pixels (3;3') having a high light emission state (18) exceeding a sensed low overall light emission state of said frame. The display controller (10) is arranged to individually control said first drive element (T1) and said second drive element (T2) by said sparkling signal such that said one or more display pixels (3;3') having said high light emission state are driven by at least one of said drive elements (T1,T2) in a sparkling light emission state (18';18") exceeding said high light emission state (18).

    • A display device has a plurality of pixels, each pixel having a current-driven display element (2) coupled between a first conductive layer (28) and a second conductive layer (27), the second conductive layer (27) being coupled to a current supply (26) via a switchable device (12) having a thin film component (122) on a first area of a substrate (120). Each pixel further has a first capacitive device having a first capacitor plate (132) on a second area of the substrate (120), the first capacitor plate (120) being conductively coupled to the thin film component, a second capacitor plate (133) and a first insulating layer (130) between the first capacitor plate (132) and the second capacitor plate (133). Stacked on top of the first capacitive device is a second capacitive device sharing the second capacitor plate (133) with the first capacitive device, the second capacitive device further comprising a third capacitor plate comprising at least a part of the second conductive layer (27), and a second insulating layer (140) between the second capacitor plate and the third capacitor plate. This arrangement benefits from larger capacitances for the first capacitive device and the second capacitive device, making them more robust against the influences of parasitic capacitances.

    • In an active matrix electroluminescent display device a storage capacitor (24) is provided in each pixel for storing a voltage to be used for addressing a drive transistor (22) which controls the illumination of the electroluminescent display element (20). A discharge photosensitive element (34) is provided for discharging the charge storage capacitor in dependence on the display element's light output. A further photosensitive element (40) is provided so as to cancel photocurrents produced in the discharge photosensitive element (34) as a result of light input to the discharge photosensitive element other than from the pixel's display element (20), the further photosensitive element being shielded (44) from light emitted by the display element while being exposed to light from other directions. Irregularities in the display output due to the effects of the unwanted light inputs to the discharge photosensitive elements are then avoided.
