    • Some embodiments of the invention are directed to a data storage system that includes a disk and solid-state non-volatile memory (NVM). During a power failure, the data storage system may use back EMF (BEMF) voltage from the spindle motor of the disk to park the heads of the disk and/or store data in the NVM. In one embodiment, a demand regulation circuit regulates loads that use voltage generated from the BEMF. The demand regulation circuit may be used to selectively cause a controller to adjust the rate of programming to the NVM in order to reduce the load. For example, the demand regulation circuit may assert a throttle signal to the controller upon detecting that the voltage generated from the BEMF is below a certain threshold. Programming rate may be throttled, programming cycles may be staggered, and/or programming time may be lengthened. Throttling may enable the use of smaller circuitry.

    • An optical disk drive includes a spindle motor, a power source, a microprocessor, and a comparator. The spindle motor is for supporting a disk. The power source supplies a first voltage to drive the spindle motor to rotate. The microprocessor signals the power source to supply a second voltage to slow down rotational speed of the spindle motor when receiving a power-off signal. The comparator compares the rotational speed with a predetermined value. The microprocessor signals the power source to stop supplying power to the spindle motor when the rotational speed is smaller than the predetermined value. A controlling method for controlling the spindle motor in the optical disk driver is also provided.

In accordance with the method and apparatus, it is possible to automatically set the signal processing mode for reproduction of video signals in a disc apparatus, by referring to video mode set data stored in the disc apparatus and a type of broadcast signals received through a receiver unit, such as a tuner, such that the signal processing mode corresponds to the mode of a display device, such as an external monitor or TV, connected to the disc apparatus. Accordingly, it is unnecessary for the user to manually set the signal processing mode of the disc apparatus.

    • PURPOSE: A method for controlling a disk stop in an optical disk device is provided to calculate a time for applying a brake voltage to stop a disk in reference to a brake voltage apply time by playback position and a brake voltage apply time by rotation reduction ratio, and to apply the brake voltage at the calculated time, thereby exactly stopping the disk. CONSTITUTION: When an optical disk is inserted(S10), a servo controller enables a motor driver to apply a driving voltage to a spindle motor to rotate an optical disk at high speed. A sled motor performs a series of initial servo operations(S11). If a user wants to stop a playback operation, the servo controller sets a disk rotation stop mode(S12), and detects a rotational angle speed of the disk(S13). The servo controller reduces a current spindle linear velocity(S14), calculates a time for applying a brake voltage, and applies the brake voltage to the spindle motor at the calculated time(S16). The servo controller continuously monitors whether the disk stops(S17).
