    • According to an exemplary embodiment, a process for coupling a mechanical interface unit to a suction-ring unit retained on an eye by suction force includes a step of relative approximating of the interface unit to the suction-ring unit in an axial direction as far as a first, predetermined relative position of the two components, which is preferentially detected by suitable sensorics. When the first relative position is attained, the evacuation is begun of a suction chamber formed between the interface unit, the suction-ring unit and the surface of the eye, whereby the partial vacuum generated establishes in the suction chamber a contact between the surface of the eye and an applanation plate retained on the interface unit, or enlarges a region of existing contact. The aspirating of the eye onto the applanation plate prevents compression loads and shear loads on the eye such as normally cannot be avoided when impressing the plate onto the eye.

    • A logging while drilling tool includes a directional resistivity antenna and an antenna shield having. The shield has at least one slot having at least one electrically open end formed therein. The antenna shield may include a base portion and a plurality of spaced apart fingers extending away from the base portion such that the finger ends are electrically isolated from the tool body and from one another. The antenna shield may alternatively include a plurality of spaced apart plates that are electrically isolated from the tool body and from one another. These antenna shields have been found to provide suitable physical protection for sensitive antenna components while at the same time being substantially transparent to both z-mode and x-mode electromagnetic waves.

    • A compensated resistivity logging while drilling tool having axially asymmetrically spaced transmitters is configured to provide compensated resistivity measurements. In one exemplary embodiment, the tool includes first and second compensating transmitters, preferably deployed axially symmetrically between first and second spaced receivers. The tool further includes a plurality of transmitters deployed axially asymmetrically with respect to the receivers, e.g., on one axial side of the receivers. The compensating transmitters are configured to acquire a borehole compensation that may be subtracted from conventional phase and attenuation measurements.
