    • A vertical autoloader design enables multiple data cartridges to be selectively loaded into a drive while minimizing the device footprint. The structure of the vertical autoloader incorporates Geneva steps into the walls of the autoloader. The Geneva steps interface with gearing on a drive carriage to move the drive vertically. The data cartridges are inserted into slots on the front of the vertical autoloader, and the data cartridges not currently loaded into the drive can be removed and replaced while the autoloader is in operation. Further, the vertical autoloader includes prevent devices in the cartridge slots to ensure the data cartridges are loaded correctly.

    • The present invention is a quadrature RF power detector circuit, which is used in conjunction with a quadrature RF power amplifier to detect and combine RF signals from an in-phase amplifier leg and from a quadrature-phase amplifier leg to provide an RF power detection signal. The quadrature RF power detector circuit includes an emitter follower amplifier for each leg of the quadrature RF power amplifier and may include doubler circuitry to detect both half-cycles of an RF signal. The emitter follower detector provides power detection with minimal DC current and without significant RF loading at the point of detection, such as an RF interstage. This balanced detector also provides more accurate power detection under high VSWR conditions due to the quadrature action minimizing peaks and valleys in the detected voltage.

    • An encryption chip is programmable to process a variety of secret key and public key encryption algorithms. The chip includes a pipeline of processing elements, each of which can process a round within a secret key algorithm. Data is transferred between the processing elements through dual port memories. A central processing unit allows for processing of very wide data words from global memory in single cycle operations. An adder circuit is simplified by using plural relatively small adder circuits with sums and carries looped back in plural cycles. Multiplier circuitry can be shared between the processing elements and the central processor by adapting the smaller processing element multipliers for concatenation as a very wide central processor multiplier.

    • A biasing circuit for a power amplifier, for use in a transmitter, that substantially reduces distortion during key-up and thereby reduces key-up time. The power amplifier includes an output transistor and a bias circuit. The bias circuit is applied to all the class AB stages of the power amplifier. The bias circuit provides to the output transistor a first bias level during the preheat period and a second bias level during the transmit period. This first bias level is predetermined to cause the output transistor to reach the steady-state junction temperature achieved by the output transistor during the transmit period (i.e., when transmitting output signals biased with the second bias level). The preheat period ends when this steady-state temperature is reached. Thus, the power amplifier can then transition to a transmit period having already reached the steady-state junction temperature. Because the output transistor is already heated to the steady-state junction temperature, "thermal" distortion (i.e., the distortion incurred when the output transistor's junction temperature changes while transmitting) is avoided and the key-up time is reduced.

    • A disk drive apparatus has an eject member that moves in tandem with a disk cartridge from a first position to a second position upon insertion of the disk cartridge into the disk drive apparatus. The eject member has a projection formed thereon. A first spring biases the eject member in a direction opposite the direction of insertion of the removable disk cartridge. A motor ring assembly mounted on a chassis of the apparatus has a rotating member that rotates between an unloaded position and a loaded position. A second spring biases the rotating member toward its loaded position. A spindle motor is mounted in the motor ring assembly. The rotating member has a first cam surface, a second cam surface that extends substantially perpendicularly to the first cam surface, and a lead-in cam angle surface that extends between the first and second cam surfaces at an angle thereto. A shape memory alloy wire or other means is provided to rotate the rotating member from its loaded position toward its unloaded position. As that occurs, the second cam surface of the rotating member moves past the projection on the eject member, thereby allowing the eject member to move back toward its first position under the force of the first spring. This, in turn, allows the projection on the eject member to push against the lead-in cam angle surface of the rotating member to rotate the rotating member further toward its unloaded position.

    • A rechargeable battery pack (10) for holding one or more batteries (19) and for connecting to an battery powered device (11). The battery pack batteries supplies electrical power to the peripheral device. The battery pack includes a case for holding at least one battery, a recharging circuit (57) connected to the at least one battery and disposed in the case and a plug (50) with prongs for electrically connecting the recharging circuit to an external source of electrical power. The plug rotates about a connection to the case from a first operational position having the plug mounted flush with the case and the prongs recessed in the case, to a second operational position with the prongs projecting from the case. The second and third operational positions of the plug are approximately orthogonal to the first operational position. The prongs are electrically connected to the recharging circuit in all operational positions. The battery pack also includes a discharging circuit (68) connected to the at least one battery and disposed within the case. A battery discharging arm (15) includes a discharging plug (61) and is rotatably connected to the case. The arm rotates from a first operating mode position having the arm rotated approximately flush with the case, to a second operating mode position with the arm projecting from the case. The first operating mode position of the arm enables the recharging circuit and disables the battery discharging circuit. The second operating mode position of the arm enables the battery discharging circuit and disable the recharging circuit.
