    • 1359994 Gas burners; pilot flame igniters RADIATION Ltd 7 Sept 1971 [7 Sept 1970] 42833/70 Headings F4T and F4F A gas burner apparatus comprises a two-part burner 1 in the form of a single casting divided by a wall 8 to define a main burner 2 with flame ports 9 and a gas injector 5a and an integral heater burner 3 with an injector 6a and flame ports 9 1 which are directed towards a mercury vapour flame probe 4 controlling a flame failure safety valve 7 in the gas supply line 5 to the main burner so that, in use, the heater burner is first lighted by a permanent pilot 17 and lighting jet 16 and when the probe has been sufficiently heated gas is admitted to the main burner which is in turn ignited by the heater burner. The gas supply system includes a timer control 14, main tap 13 and thermostat 19. In an alternative arrangement the main gas supply line 12 branches, one branch leading via the thermostat 19 to the valve 7 which now acts as the main tap while the other branch which has a feed line 18 to the pilot 17 as in the embodiment illustrated leads to a two way tap to feed the heater burner either directly or through the timer control 14. In an alternative embodiment of the burner apparatus the ignition jet 16 may be omitted and the pilot 17 placed adjacent the heater burner in which additional flame carrier ports are formed either directly or by means of a surmounted perforated plate. Instead of a pilot 17, spark or filament ignition may be used. The heater and main burners, instead of being formed integrally, may be formed separately and secured together, a mixing tube may be let into a casting to form the heater burner.

    • 1335426 Forced circulation oven RADIATION Ltd 19 June 1972 [18 June 1971] 28736/71 Heading F4W In a forced circulation cooling or food-warming oven, the gases from the fan 8 pass into the oven parallel and adjacent to one wall of the oven chamber, and at least one protuberance 19, 20 on the wall deflects the gases to improve the distribution of heat. The gases from the oven are withdrawn at the bottom through a drip tray cover 15 and drip tray 16 to a fan inlet box 7, and delivered by the fan 8 to an outlet 17a extending the full width of the back wall 12. Gases from a burner 11a enter the oven through an outlet 17b and studs 10c on a wall of the fan outlet passage improve the heating of the recirculated gases. A deflector 18 in the outlet passage 17b deflects part of the gases below a bottom shelf, and a nose 19 and steps 20 on the back wall deflects the gas flow over goods on the oven shelves. A vent 21 prevents pressure build up in the oven. In another embodiment Fig. 6, a fan 48 at the side of the oven delivers gases to the top of the opposite side wall, which has steps 53. The drip tray cover 42 forming the bottom of the oven has a series of openings 44 with downwardly directed lips, and the drip tray 45 has staggered openings 46 with upwardly directed lips so that grease and particles are extracted from the gases as they pass to the fan inlet passage 47. The oven is heated by a burner 54, from which the gases pass to an inlet 56 in the fan outlet passage 50. Two oven chambers may be heated by a single burner and fan arrangement, and the circulating gases may be heated by electric elements in the fan outlet passage. The oven shelves may be mounted on a rack which can be removed from the oven.

The cap 2 is formed with castellations 7, which react on an outer ledge 5 of the body 1. Gas flowing along the second fuel passageways 12 enters chambers 15 and is deflected by walls 13 to flow to the lower parts of flame ports 20 at low velocity to stabilize the rest of the flame formed by the combustion of gas fed to the upper parts of flame ports 20 via passageways 18. The invention may be employed in other forms of burner, e.g. a bar burner.

    • 1311476 Control systems for electric ovens RADIATION Ltd 15 April 1970 [15 April 1969] 19244/69 Heading H2H [Also in Division H1] A control arrangement for a cooking oven is provided with an electrical control circuit to control the oven heating means, the control circuit incorporating manual and automatic time control functions and being provided with a single indicated OFF position to which it automatically reverts at the end of an automatically timed cooking sequence. The oven heating means may be an electric heating resistance or gas with relay operated taps. An oven heating resistor 5 is supplied from an A.C. source 1 by way of a thermostat 4 1 and a control unit 2 1 having settable controls 2a, 2b. The control 2a is moved from the OFF position anticlockwise to the ON position and subsequently back to the OFF position for manual control of the oven. The control 2a is moved clockwise to any desired time setting when it is desired to control the oven automatically and the control will return to the OFF position when the cooking process is to be ended. Thus whenever the oven is not in use the control unit 2 1 will indicate OFF. The control 2b is set when it is required to delay the start of an automatically timed cooking process. Alternatively a delayed start cooking operation can be effected by turning the control to the required finish cooking time and then turning the control backwards by the required cooking time.
