    • PURPOSE:To develop an impermeable carbon material which has a high carbonization rate and is small in shrinkage at the time of carbonization by subjecting a thermally cured molding consisting of a thermosetting intermediate product which is obtd. by a reaction of a mixture composed of a condensed polycyclic arom. compd., arom. crosslinking agent and acid catalyst and a specific aggregate to thermal curing and molding, then carbonizing the molding. CONSTITUTION:The mixture composed of the condensed polycyclic arom. compd. which is a deriv. consisting of naphthalene, etc., as main skeleton, heavy gravity oils of coal and petroleum, tar, etc., and the oxide, sulfide, halide, etc. of said materials, the arom. crosslinking agent consisting of 1 or >=2 arom. rings contg. a hydroxyl methyl group, etc., and the acid catalyst such as aluminum chloride or phosphoric acid or the thermosetting intermediate product obtd. by the thermal reaction of such mixture is compounded with the aggregate such as fibers and granular particles of carbon or graphite. Such mixture is heated to 100-400 deg.C in an oxidative or nonoxidative atmosphere and is plasticized. The mixture is thereafter thermally cured and molded to the prescribed shape and is heated in succession to carbonize and further to graphitize the same. The impermeable carbon material which has high carbonization rate, is small in shrinkage at the time of carbonization and has intricate shape is thus produced.

    • PURPOSE:To produce an impermeable carbon material having superior heat and chemical resistances, dimensional stability and strength by combining a specified thermosetting composition with a carbonaceous or graphitic skeleton material treated with an aromatic cross-linking agent and by molding the resulting composite body by heat curing. CONSTITUTION:The surface of a carbonaceous or graphitic skeleton material having hydrogen, halogen, hydroxyl or other functional groups on the surface is treated with an aromatic cross-linking agent having one or more aromatic rings each having two or more hydroxymethyl or halomethyl groups. A mixture of a condensed polycyclic aromatic compound having oxygen, sulfur, halogen or the like in the molecule having two or more rings with said aromatic cross-linking agent and an acid catalyst is prepd. or the mixture is brought into a reaction by heating to prepare a thermosetting intermediate reaction product. The treated skeleton material is combined with the thermosetting composition and the resulting composite body is plasticized at 100-400 deg.C in an oxidizing or nonoxidizing atmosphere and molded by heat curing. Thus, the skeleton materials and the thermosetting composition are bonded to each other with the aromatic cross-linking agent in-between and an impermeable carbon material suitable for various machine parts is obtd.

    • PURPOSE:An electrically conductive adhesive, obtained by reacting a condensed polycyclic aromatic compound with an aromatic crosslinking agent and acid catalyst and further reacting the resultant thermosetting composition with an electrically conducting promotion catalyst, capable of exhibiting electric conductivity without containing an electrically conductive aggregate and having improved heat resistance, thermal conductivity, etc. CONSTITUTION:An electrically conductive adhesive obtained by reacting a condensed polycyclic aromatic compound, preferably naphthalene, etc., with an aromatic crosslinking agent, preferably p-xylylene dichloride, etc., and an acid catalyst, preferably aluminum chloride, etc., preferably at 0.5-4.0molar ratio of the aromatic crosslinking agent to the condensed polycyclic aromatic compound using the acid catalyst in an amount of 0.5-10wt% based on the mixture of the condensed polycyclic aromatic compound with the aromatic crosslinking agent while heating and further reacting the resultant thermosetting composition with an electrically conducting promotion catalyst, preferably an oxidixing agent, e.g. air, or a mixture thereof with aluminum chloride. USE:A heat-resistant material, electromagnetic wave shielding material, etc.
